Back in the 1980s, almost every self-respecting music lover had a Technics stackable silver hi-fi system in the corner of their living room. Technics audio was everywhere, along with the brand’s legendary SL-1200 direct-drive turntables. Then the brand vanished almost overnight, but in 2014, parent company Panasonic resurrected the Technics name for high-end audio systems and wireless earbuds.

Technics says its approach to sound has always been about faithfully reproducing music as the artist intended, while carefully avoiding excessive colouration of the music. Now the brand is launching a flagship pair of over-ear wireless headphones. The EAH-A1000 continues the Technics philosophy of faithfully reproducing the atmosphere of the original performance or recording session.

To achieve this lofty aim, Technics has reconsidered every design element of its over-ear headphones, including the driver mechanism, diaphragm material, surround structure, acoustic design and even the way the headphones fit and seal around the wearer’s ears.

Technics set out to combine low-distortion reproduction with a wide and expansive soundstage that over-ear headphones are so good at reproducing. To do this, the company’s engineers decided that a new type of larger driver would be essential.

Drivers with larger diameters are generally more difficult to control. Even a slight tilting, misalignment or flexing of the transducers can create distortion. To overcome this, the EAH-A1000 headphones have been fitted with 40mm magnetic fluid drivers. These drivers are based on the magnetic fluid technology already used in the company’s EAH-TZ700 IEMs and the EAH-AZ100 wireless earbuds.

Magnetic fluid is a functional material that has both magnetic and liquid properties. When it’s placed between the voice coil and driver magnet, it supports more precise driver movement while also suppressing unwanted vibrations and distortion that can happen when using large-diameter drivers.

Symmetrical Surround Technology Edge

To further boost the performance of the 40mm magnetic fluid drivers, the EAH-A1000 headphones use Symmetrical Surround Technology Edge. The technology is already used in Technics Hi-Fi flagship speakers and it improves the symmetry of the back-and-forth movement of the edge by supporting the diaphragm and minimizing distortion.

The diaphragm is lightweight and made from rigid carbon fiber. Its cone shape also helps suppress some of the flexing that can occur with large-diameter diaphragms and provides a faster response and more stable movement.

Together, these two technologies are designed to preserve the sense of scale in the bass frequencies and increase the width of the soundstage while reproducing the music more faithfully with greater accuracy and detail.

Natural, Spacious Presentation

The EAH-A1000 headphones feature an acoustic path that preserves the air movement generated by the drivers all the way to the listener’s ears. A Baffle Flat Structure reduces uneven surfaces around the driver, limiting any unwanted acoustic reflections and creating a more natural sound field that has clearer imaging.

Behind the driver, there is an Acoustic Control Chamber that manages the airflow. By balancing the low and midrange frequencies, its job is to balance the sound without overemphasizing any particular frequency range.

The new headphones also include Adaptive Noise Cancelling, a technology that automatically optimizes the amount of noise-cancelling based on the ambient noise that’s detected by microphones in each earcup. The system also monitors the physical fit of the headphones. There are three feed-forward microphones and one feedback microphone on each side to detect and suppress noise entering from different directions.

Premium Design And Lightweight Look

Technics has given the new headphones a more modern and sleek appearance. A new Flow Arm uses a distinctive structure that begins with a square profile at the slider end and shifts into a triangular shape at the hanger end. The single-sided support matches Technics’ signature circular housings, creating a light and streamlined look. Metal forms both the arm and the top panels of the driver housings, featuring the circular machining typical of Technics products.

Wearing comfort has been optimized with a wider range of earcup movements, a refined headband shape and improved adjustability of the slider to distribute pressure evenly across the wearer’s head, which reduces strain and fits a wider range of head shapes. The ear cushions are stuffed with high-density memory foam chosen for durability and comfort, especially on extended listening sessions.

The new EAH-A1000 headphones support the high-resolution LDAC audio codec and USB Audio, but not the aptX family of codecs. A full charge of the user-replaceable battery provides up to 45 hours of continuous playing time. There’s support for Multipoint Bluetooth connectivity for up to three simultaneous connections. Playback is controlled by dedicated physical buttons on the headphones and a slide control interface.

The Technics EAH-A1000 wireless, over-ear headphones are available in Black and Platinum Greige, a new finish combining subtle grey and beige tones with a more contemporary finish. The EAH-A1000 headphones are priced at $449 / £399 / €449.
