Looking for Wednesday ’ s Pips? Read our guide right here .
In Pips, you have a grid of multicolored boxes. Each colored area represents a different “condition” that you have to achieve. You have a select number of dominoes that you have to spend filling in the grid. You must use every domino and achieve every condition properly to win. There are Easy, Medium and Difficult tiers.
Here’s an example of a difficult tier Pips:
As you can see, the grid has a bunch of symbols and numbers with each color. On the far left, the three purple squares must not equal one another (hence the equal sign crossed out). The two pink squares next to that must equal a total of 0. The zig-zagging blue squares all must equal one another. You click on dominoes to rotate them, and will need to since they have to be rotated to fit where they belong.
Not shown on this grid are other conditions, such as “less than” or “greater than.” If there are multiple tiles with > or < signs, the total of those tiles must be greater or less than the listed number. It varies by grid. Blank spaces can have anything. The various possible conditions are:
- = All pips must equal one another in this group.
- ≠ All pips must not equal one another in this group.
- > The pip in this tile (or tiles) must be greater than the listed number.
- < The pip in this tile must be less than the listed number.
- An exact number (like 6) The pip must equal this exact number.
- Tiles with no conditions can be anything.
In order to win, you have to use up all your dominoes by filling in all the squares, making sure to fit each condition. Sometimes there’s only one way to solve the puzzle. Other times, there can be two or more different solutions. Play today’s Pips puzzle here .

Hard Pips Walkthrough And Solution
Here’s today’s Hard Pips:
I admit, I groaned when I saw today’s Hard Pips. These ones can be so tricky. The one earlier this week was among the most challenging Hard Pips I’ve had to solve. Today’s was much easier, but it’s a bit sneaky. As you can see, there are no 1 tiles, which means the majority of free tiles will likely be 1’s. However, we have a Green 4 group with two tiles and we have an Orange > 3 and Blue < 3 tile, and < 3 could easily be 1. 1 + 3 can also make 4. In other words, it’s not as straightforward as it appears, even though we have exactly 5 free tiles and exactly 5 1’s. We also have no doubles, so anytime you see two numbers next to each other, you have a good place to start.
Start by placing the 4/0 domino from Orange 4 up into Dark Blue 0 in the bottom left corner. The 4/3 domino goes from Dark Blue 4 over to Green 3. The 3/0 domino goes right next to that, from Pink 3 into Blue 0. Next, place the 0/1 domino from Green 0 into the first free tile, and the 5/3 domino from Blue 5 into the second free tile. I had placed the 5/1 domino here originally but it turned out I needed that elsewhere.
Place the 5/1 domino from Orange > 3 up into Blue < 3. The 0/2 domino goes above that, from Orange 0 into Green 4. Place the 2/1 domino from Pink 2 up into the third free tile and the 4/1 domino from Purple 4 into the fourth free tile. Finally, place the 3/1 domino from Orange 3 down into the final free tile. I usually save free tiles for the end, but in this case it makes more sense to get them out of the way.
Place the 5/2 domino from Pink 5 up into Purple 2 in the top left corner. The 4/5 domino goes from Pink 4 down into Blue 5 and the 2/3 domino goes across from Blue 2 into Orange 3. Place the 4/2 domino from Dark Blue 4 over into Green 3 and finish things up with the 0/5 domino from Dark Blue 0 into Purple 5.
This one wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, but I did have to adjust a few things at the end to make everything work, and when I was left with that 5/3 domino I almost despaired — until I remembered I’d placed the 5/1 earlier. Close one!
