iOS 26.7.1—Update Now Warning Issued To iPhone Users
Apple has released iOS 26.7.1, an emergency iPhone update fixing a single security vulnerability that has already been used in real-life attacks.
Apple doesn’t offer much detail about what’s fixed in iOS 26.7.1, to allow as many users as possible to update before other attackers can get hold of the details.
The issue patched in iOS 26.7.1 is a flaw in Apple’s rendering framework CoreGraphics tracked as CVE-2026-86950 , where processing a maliciously crafted file could lead to arbitrary code execution. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27 ,” Apple said on its support page .
The fact that iOS 26.7.1 has been released as a standalone update so soon after iOS 26.7 shows how serious the issue is. While Apple hasn’t confirmed the type of attack the issue was exploited in, its description bears the hallmarks of spyware .
It also comes after Apple issued a warning that spyware was targeting a specific set of individuals.
In spyware attacks, adversaries use a security issue or combination of flaws, with attacks often arriving via an image sent to iMessage or WhatsApp. Spyware is often used in a so called “zero-click” attack, which requires no interaction from the user. Once you receive the image, the malware can make its way onto your device, recording everything you see or do, including via encrypted apps such as Signal.
Why You Should Update Now To iOS 26.7.1
Apple’s iOS 26.7.1 is an urgent update for the many people who don’t want to upgrade to iOS 27 just yet. While spyware is extremely targeted against groups such as dissidents, journalists and government officials, once the details of flaws are out there, they can be used more broadly.
If you do think you have been targeted by spyware, the malware can be temporarily disrupted by turning your iPhone off and on again. Yet this is not a permanent solution and it’s usually recommended that you ditch your iPhone altogether.
Apple’s iOS 26.7.1 is available for the iPhone 11 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 8th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.
So, what are you waiting for? Go to Settings > General > Software Update and update to iOS 26.7.1 now.
