Just two weeks after the first release of the latest iPhone software cycle, iOS 27, Apple has launched its first update. It’s a smallish release, and while earlier reports predicted it would be for the users of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, there’s a separate section which applies to earlier iPhones, too. Here are first reactions to the new update and whether you should install now or hold off.

Who Is It For And How Do You Get It?

This update is for every iPhone from the iPhone 11 onwards. That’s the same series of iPhones that could run iOS 26, so if your phone handled the last software, it can manage this.

Open the Settings app on the iPhone, click on General, then Software Update. Next, tap on Download and Install, and the software will download from there. This download is smallish, a whisker more than a gigabyte, though if you’re coming from iOS 26, your download could be significantly bigger.

Apple iOS 27.0.1: What It’s About

Most of the update is directed at two iPhones only, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. You can read more about it here , but these phones had an issue which affected Face ID for some users. Secondly, and also for the latest models only, photos taken in very specific conditions could result in a color artifact appearing on what Apple described as a small number of iPhones. Finally, something that Apple says affects all iPhones compatible with iOS 27: opening Control Center at the same time as Notification Center was causing the touchscreen on some iPhones to become unresponsive. This has been fixed.

Apple confirmed that there are no security updates in this release. There were over 100 security fixes in iOS 27, so maybe it’s no surprise there are none here.

Apple iOS 27.0.1 : Initial Reactions

Reactions have been mixed, though there have been plenty of positive comments on performance areas, for instance. Some noted a “weird little line under the time sometimes,” but this has been revealed to be a feature, not a bug. It’s there, for instance, when you unlock the iPhone as a visual indicator that the action to invoke the Notification Center now comes from swiping down from the top left (where the time indicator sits), not from swiping from the top center as it used to be.

There don’t seem to be new issues arising that weren’t in the first release, so if you’re on iOS 27, you should definitely update to ensure that you rid yourself of the Face ID bug if you’re on the latest phones, or to sort the touchscreen response issue on other phones.
