‘You Can See Everything’ Lands A Metacritic Review Score Record
When 2026 began, not many people would have imagined that a three-hour documentary that consisted of Nathan Fielder staying in Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes’ house would be arguably the best movie of the year. Well, here we are, and the scores for You Can See Everything are so good, they’ve set a decade-long record on Metacritic.
The way Metacritic works as opposed to the Rotten Tomatoes thumbs up or down system is that it factors in individual scores to produce a final number. So while a 6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes is technically fresh, it would drag the Metacritic score down. Here, however, You Can See Everything has landed a 98/100 , meaning almost every review it’s gotten is a perfect 10 or 5/5 stars (it was 99 last night).
This has not happened in a full decade, at least if we’re going by Best Picture Oscar winners. Moonlight , the Oscar-winning 2016 film, had a 99 (where the show took place in 2017), but that is far from the case with most films. If any. Here’s the list of the last 20 years of Best Picture winners:
- Anora (2025) – 91
- Oppenheimer (2024) – 90
- Everything Everywhere All At Once (2023) – 81
- CODA (2022) – 72
- Nomandland (2021) – 89
- Parasite (2020) – 97
- Green Book (2019) – 69
- The Shape of Water (2018) - 87
- Moonlight (2017) – 99
- Spotlight (2016) – 93
- Birdman (2015) – 88
- 12 Years a Slave (2014) – 96
- Argo (2013) – 86
- The Artist (2012) – 89
- The King’s Speech (2011) – 88
- The Hurt Locker (2010) – 94
- Slumdog Millionaire (2009) – 86
- No Country for Old Men (2008) – 91
- The Departed (2007) – 85
- Crash (2006) – 69
So you see how significant this is. Parasite is close with a 97, but besides Moonlight , there’s nothing here that reaches a 98/99. It’s also interesting to look at this year, where presumed frontrunner The Odyssey has an 88. Obsession , one of the biggest success stories of the year, has a 77. And of course, over on Rotten Tomatoes, You Can See Everything has a 100% critic score , but early audience reviews also give it a 99% score.
Any movie with scores this high is at the very least going to be a serious contender for Best Picture. This is obviously noteworthy as You Can See Everything is the only documentary on this list, and if it was even nominated , it would be the first documentary ever in the Best Picture category. But yes, according to Oscar rules, documentaries are allowed to be nominated here if they meet distribution rules.
We will see how audiences react as the weekend rolls on, and how it performs at the box office, but the film is already putting up an incredible performance with critics, one we almost never see.
