Budget smart security specialist Wyze has taken the covers off a new budget indoor security camera that can spin all the way around the room, follow movement, and also physically point its lens away when you don't want it watching.

The new Wyze Indoor Cam Pan costs $39.98, making it $5 cheaper than the Cam Pan v3, which remains on sale.

The newer model bumps up the resolution to 2K though… so don’t buy the old one at that price.

The headline feature is its physical privacy mode that, rather than simply disabling the camera through a software setting, has the lens rotate down into the body of the device and powers off, giving you a more obvious indication that it isn’t recording the room - complete with a cute little shut-eye icon for extra confirmation.

When it’s active the new Indoor Cam Pan can rotate through 360 degrees and tilt vertically by 103 degrees, with AI-powered motion tracking allowing it to follow a person, pet, or other moving subject around the room.

Wyze says it has also fitted the camera with its quietest and smoothest motor yet, which should make the tracking feature a little more suitable when used in rooms like bedrooms and nurseries as baby/child monitors.

The AI can also be configured to ignore certain activity, including robot vacuums, or movement outside customizable detection zones.

As mentioned, video is recorded in 2K resolution, putting it ahead of the older Cam Pan v3's 1080p feed but below the $59.98 Cam Pan v4 , which offers 4K recording.

The newest Wyze camera also includes infrared night vision, although its frame rate drops from 20fps to 15fps in low-light conditions.

There’s a microSD card slot supporting cards up to 512GB for local storage, along with two-way audio and a built-in 95-decibel siren.

It can also listen for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and send an alert when it hears one going off, while Alexa and Google Home support means you can pull up its live feed on a compatible smart display such as an Echo Show.

As with Wyze’s other cameras, you can add Cam Plus or Cam Unlimited plans for extra AI-powered smarts, including alerts that can provide descriptions of what the camera has detected.

For less than $40, though, the physical privacy feature, 2K video, full-room pan and tilt, local storage, and AI tracking make Wyze’s latest indoor camera look like a decent option for anyone who wants a cheap but capable camera to cover more than a static space.
