There has been a slew of projects over the past few months as various players attempt to “sunrise” old sunset content in Destiny 2, bringing back vaulted locations and raids and restoring them to their former state through mods. Then Bungie announced it was unvaulting all that stuff anyway in a recent surprise reveal after the series was thought to be dead.

But the technical side of that project was fascinating, and now we are seeing something that goes above and beyond restoring sunset content. Player isinternets has put Destiny 1 raid Wrath of the Machine in Destiny 2, with collaborator Flummoxed porting its weapons as well. This is not a joke:

This supposedly took about a week to do, and is hugely significant as Wrath of the Machine looks to be the single raid from Destiny 1 that will never be ported into Destiny 2. And even if a recently rumored Destiny 1 remaster happens, that will not be the same as playing it in Destiny 2 itself.

There are things to be worked on still, enemy spawns and lighting and more, as obviously this is a huge project, but the fact that this exists at all is stunning. Isinternets has openly asked Bungie if they want to work together on restoration:

“Also bungie if you want, get in contact, will send you native pkgs to go implement it in live. have full shader conversion, pkg and effect conversions, weapon conversion, deadass everything you need. It is all done natively with minimal hooks (have a few for model imports, word compatibility and loading/rendering). Nothing that natively effects game behavior, generators, spawns, combat, animations, etc, is all done natively!”

I am having a little trouble processing how this is even possible, but we have seen wild things happen in the gaming industry over the past few months from decompiling, blending games together like Mario put into Elden Ring and Halo Spartans thrown into Gears of War . This has, of course, sparked debates about the use of AI and “vibe coding” in projects like this, but the end result is certainly something to see.

The ultimate plan is to release Wrath, the Plaguelands, and all story content/raids from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2’ s Shadowkeep in one package players can grab for themselves. Obviously, all of this is separate from the real game, and you’re not modding it into the live version, but it’s absurd it’s possible to play all of this at all.

So, even if Bungie unvaults all of Destiny 2 and remasters Destiny 1, we still won’t get things like Destiny 2 Guardians being able to run Wrath, barring some sort of Bungie bonus release we don’t know about. I doubt that Bungie is simply going to grab assets from this person and throw it into the game, but we are living in a new era, that’s for sure.
