Wolverine , Insomniac’s next big superhero game and PlayStation exclusive, drops next week. Ahead of that, the review embargo has been lifted, and the game has a 78 Metacritic score . That’s a full 9 points below Insomniac’s original Spider-Man , and well below Spider-Man 2’ s 90.

The current discourse involves mainly how Wolverine appears overly hand-holdy, with “ fart trails ” telling players where to go in an extremely linear game, among other indicators. The most-viewed reviewer on the internet, YouTuber Skillup, has 1.7 million views on his review , which decimates the game even more than most.

In a vacuum, a 78 may be a decent enough score for some games, but not in this context, where it roughly equates to a C+ in the perception of the games industry. But while a big story yesterday was Sony losing Hideo Kojima and his new game to Microsoft, what’s happening with Wolverine here is a much bigger deal.

First, as it stands, this is so far one of the biggest games of the PS5 generation, which now spans six years. For first-party releases, the top-earners are Insomniac’s own Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 . It is well-known that this has been a sparse generation for PlayStation first-party hits, and after this, Sony is hoping for two more in the form of God of War Laufey and the first Naughty Dog game this entire generation, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which seems to slowly be sliding into this next console generation.

Second, this is Insomniac, which has probably been the most reliable first-party studio for Sony over the years. Insomniac has produced six big games in eight years as opposed to Naughty Dog’s one game in six years, The Last of Us Part 2 . Since 2018, Insomniac has made Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man 2 and now Wolverine , releasing almost all of these with very few typical AAA delays. Outside of Wolverine none of those scored below an 85. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were the best-selling first-party games of the PS4 and PS5 generations. This is the first time Insomniac has faltered in a significant way, raising questions about what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future.

Finally, this is a very bad moment for PlayStation to have a whiff on a big, first-party, story-driven AAA game, which is supposed to be the brand’s bread and butter. We are still in the middle of a Sony live-service push that has resulted in disastrous launches, cancelled games, underwhelming playercounts, not-promising future titles, and killing live updates for Destiny 2 , its only first-party game with an actual playerbase. I think you could argue that Wolverine was meant to be the most significant PS5 game since 2022’s God of War Ragnarok , and landing with a thud like this is a very big deal indeed.

What Sony wants the most, of course, is sales. I don’t think anyone expected an M-rated Wolverine game to sell as much as a sprawling, T-rated Spider-Man game, but we also don’t know for sure what expectations are either. We will see if audiences agree with critics starting next week.
