While games like God of War and The Last of Us may grab the majority of headlines when it comes to PlayStation exclusives, many may not realize that for two generations now, PS4 and PS5, there’s one series that tops both. That would be Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, climbing to the top spot in the PS4 era over God of War with 22.6 million sales by last count. Then, for the PS5, Spider-Man 2 has sold an estimated 18.2 million units (though the game drew some concern, given that it was triple the budget of the first).

Now, Spidey developer Insomniac is back with another Marvel game, and one that is not about slinging webs. Rather, cutting a lot of body parts off. It’s Wolverine , out this fall, arriving on September 15, 2026. Today, many journalists and influencers announced they had been given codes and confirmed the review embargo for Thursday, September 10 at 8 AM PT.

While the total hours are not confirmed, as a linear game as opposed to Spider-Man’s open world, it stands to reason Wolverine will be shorter. So, in the context of how game reviews work, giving critics over two weeks to review it is a whole lot of breathing room. And an embargo nearly a week early can be viewed as a sign of confidence (though there are plenty of day-before, day-of embargoes for good games).

Wolverine is a very, very important game for Sony:

  • As said, Insomniac’s Spider-Man has been PlayStation’s top seller for two generations now, so expectations are high for Wolverine .
  • The PS5 generation has been criticized by fans for not having many high-profile exclusives, including Naughty Dog not releasing a new game in this entire generation so far. The best-selling exclusives* on PS5 have been Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok (also on PS4), Helldivers 2 (which also launched on Steam), Gran Turismo 7 and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart . Not exactly an ultra-powerhouse lineup after almost six years.
  • Rather, a big Sony story over the last few years has been a remarkably awful push into live-service games, its only big success being Helldivers 2, a game that isn’t from a first-party studio. Sony released all-time disaster Concord , cancelled Naughty Dog’s Last of Us Factions live-service game (part of the reason that studio hasn’t produced a game this generation) and Bungie’s Marathon has gained almost no traction.

So, Wolverine is a big deal. Likely bigger than God of War: Laufey , out February 2027, and possibly even more than Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet , if that even comes out before the PS6.

So far, despite some online debates, Wolverine is looking good and likely will be a hit, barring any disasters. We’ll find out more in just over two weeks when reviews come in.
