I’ve covered enough consumer-tech launches to know the hardest challenge is rarely making the technology work. It’s convincing the public that the technology won’t be used against them. Meta is relearning that lesson in real time with its smart glasses—and the irony is hard to miss. The company succeeded where Google Glass failed a decade ago by making its cameras look ordinary. Now that very success may be its greatest liability.

Meta Solved Google Glass’s Design Problem

Google Glass died because it looked like surveillance equipment. The visible camera module, the awkward silhouette, the instant "glasshole" backlash — all of it signaled to bystanders that something unusual and possibly invasive was happening. Meta learned from Google’s failure. Meta’s glasses, built with Ray-Ban's design language, look like ordinary eyewear. That normalcy was the breakthrough.

However, activist groups have now papered over Meta glasses advertisements in New York, London, and Washington, DC, with posters recasting the product as surveillance tech rather than a lifestyle accessory. That's not a fringe reaction. It's a signal that the public conversation around these devices has shifted from "how do they work?" to "who is being watched, and do they know it?”

A Privacy Indicator Is Not Meaningful Consent

The core tension is one I've written about before in the context of AI more broadly: capability is outpacing consent. Meta's glasses currently rely on a single small LED as the entire signal to bystanders that recording is happening. Anyone who has

spent time around these devices knows how easy that light is to miss, ignore, or not understand. Compare that to the deliberate, almost theatrical shutter sounds Apple and Google have long required on phone cameras specifically to prevent covert photography. A single LED is a checkbox for compliance, not a real communication tool.

Meta’s response, a patch that turns off the camera if the privacy light is physically tampered with, is a reasonable security fix, but it addresses the wrong problem. It stops someone from turning off the warning light. It does nothing to make the warning light more visible or more trusted in the first place. Critics are right that this reads as a technical patch to what is fundamentally a design and policy concern.

What causes me apprehension is the pattern behind the headline. Reports of facial-recognition capabilities, discussions of always-on recording, and looser controls around voice-data training all point in the same direction. Meta appears to treat privacy as a product feature to adjust according to strategy, rather than as a baseline commitment. Instagram’s decision to remove Meta-glasses footage that exploits or harasses unsuspecting people amounts to a tacit admission that the risk is already real.

This is a solvable problem, and Meta has the engineering talent to solve it. Bystander notification doesn't have to be a single LED — it could be an audible cue, a more prominent visual indicator, or even proximity-based alerts to nearby phones. None of this is exotic. The fact that Meta shipped a product this visible in the marketplace without a more robust consent mechanism suggests the calculation was commercial, not technical: a subtler indicator sells better than an obvious one.

Category-defining products get remembered for how they're introduced. If "Meta glasses" becomes shorthand for "device that might be recording you without your knowledge," that reputation will be difficult to shake, no matter how good the hardware becomes. And it hands a real opening to Apple and Google, both of which have historically leaned into privacy as a brand differentiator — Apple explicitly, Google more inconsistently, but both aware of the reputational stakes involved in wearable cameras.

Trust Must be Designed In

The lesson is familiar, but Meta’s predicament makes it newly urgent: in consumer hardware, especially devices worn on the body and aimed at other people, trust cannot be bolted on after launch. It has to be designed into the product from day one. Meta succeeded in making smart glasses look normal. Its next, and more consequential, challenge is making them feel safe, not just for the wearer but for everyone nearby. So far, it has solved only half the problem.
