Fans are starting to bite their nails, given that Lioness season 4 has not been given the green light before or after its huge cliffhanger of a finale , which seems to demand renewal. Did Lioness not perform well enough? Does it cost too much? Is it over now?

We don’t have all the answers to those questions (though I can’t imagine performance was a problem), but fans shouldn’t be worried, given the series’ history. We are now just 48 hours from the finale of season 3 of Lioness , and that is a tiny amount of time compared to when the last two seasons were renewed.

Lioness season 2 was renewed eight months after the season 1 finale. Lioness season 3 was renewed 10 months after the season 2 finale. The gaps from finale to airing were 14 months and 20 months, respectively, for those seasons.

So, you can see why concern isn’t really warranted. Sure, it would have been nice to get a highly confident pre-season 3 finale renewal, or to have an instant one right after it finished, but the show’s history does not at all indicate that this was ever going to be the case.

Still, it can come off as weird. Few returning shows do this. Why does Lioness ? A few reasons.

  • Creator and writer Taylor Sheridan’s workload is absolutely insane. He not only writes every episode of Lioness , but does the same for Landman , the most important show on Paramount+ because of its viewership. And the shows he’s not writing, he’s supervising, be it Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, Dutton Ranch, Marshals , and the upcoming Frisco King with Samuel L. Jackson. It’s a ton to manage.
  • Cast availability. This mainly focuses on two A-listers, first being Zoe Saldana, the second-highest-grossing actor ever, who stars in Avatar movies and has two more coming. She has three other movies in post-production as well. Then there’s the extremely busy Nicole Kidman, who has appeared in 13 other movies or shows since 2023 alone, and also has four other projects in various stages of filming or production.
  • Cost. There are seasonal budgets to be worked out, but also cast contracts, not just for the A-listers but for the rest of the cast as well, who will no doubt want and deserve more money as the show presses on and becomes more and more popular. So that can take some time.

I am confident, as is the cast, according to recent interviews, that Lioness season 4 will happen, but even if we go 6+ months without any word about that, it still wouldn’t be time to panic given the history of the series. So relax, for now.
