Why Do Humans Have Armpit Hair? An Evolutionary Biologist Explains
Almost everyone meets their armpit hair as a grooming question. It shows up around 13, nobody explains it, and within a year or two it has been sorted into the category of things you manage. The biology is a different story, and it starts from the opposite direction. To a biologist, the puzzle isn’t that we have too much hair there. It’s that we have any.
Humans are a strange primate in this respect. A chimpanzee our size is covered in hair and we are not. The usual explanation has to do with heat. When early members of our genus moved into hotter and more open country, bare skin turned out to work well with an unusually high number of sweat glands. Most estimates put that number somewhere between 2 million and 4 million. Sweat evaporates off open skin and cools the blood underneath it. A coat gets in the way of that.
If keeping cool was the pressure, though, the armpit is the last place you would expect an exception. It is a warm hollow that barely ventilates. And it holds some of the coarsest hair we grow.
The first hint about why comes from the timing. Nobody has armpit hair as a child. It arrives at puberty, under the influence of androgens, at the same moment the body begins signaling that it can reproduce. When a trait holds off until sexual maturity , the explanation is usually social rather than physical.
What Armpit Hair Is Actually For
Underneath the armpit sits a kind of gland you do not have much of anywhere else. Apocrine glands are not the ordinary sweat glands that cover the rest of you. They do not even open onto the skin. They empty into the hair follicle itself, and what they release is thick and oily and has almost no smell when it leaves the body. Like the hair, they sit quiet until puberty and then switch on.
The smell comes afterward, and it is not really produced by you. Bacteria living on the skin feed on that oily secretion and break it into smaller compounds, and those compounds are what anyone actually smells. A 2013 review published in FEMS Microbiology Ecology traced most of that conversion to skin bacteria, Corynebacterium chief among them.
The hair helps because it gives all of this somewhere to go. A shaft of hair is surface area standing out in moving air. Whatever the glands release travels up it and evaporates from it much more readily than it would from skin folded against itself.
Compared with other apes, humans carry unusually dense armpit hair, and a 2011 study published in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology tested this directly by shaving one armpit and not the other, building on the premise that the hair helps retain the signaling compounds made underneath it.
That reframes the armpit. It is not a patch that evolution forgot to clear. The glands and the hair arrive together on the same hormonal signal, in one of the few spots on an upright animal where air moves freely all day.
Where The Science Remains Unclear On Armpit Hair
Chemical communication among mammals is not in dispute. Human body odor also carries genuine information about health and diet and hormonal state. What has never held up is the stronger claim that we have pheromones in the technical sense, meaning particular molecules that produce a particular response.
People have nominated candidates for decades without settling it. The familiar idea that we are drawn to the scent of partners whose immune genes differ from our own comes out of real research, but a 2022 review published in Biology argues the signal mechanism itself has largely been identified. What’s still debated is whether it reliably drives mate preference in humans, since a study in PLOS Genetics found conflicting results across prior human research.
Scent is the leading explanation rather than the only one. A simpler possibility is mechanical. The armpit is a joint that swings thousands of times a day with skin sliding against skin, and hair keeps those surfaces from catching on each other. It also helps moisture leave a fold where it would otherwise sit and soften the skin. There is no reason both explanations cannot be right at once.
One last fact tends to rearrange how people think about this. We have roughly 5 million hair follicles, which is about what you would find on a chimpanzee our size. What changed in our lineage was not the number of follicles but what they produce. Almost everywhere, ours make a fine pale hair you can only see in good light. In the armpit and groin, androgens turn those same follicles toward thick hair instead.
Which means the intuition most of us carry is upside down. We treat body hair as a leftover and smooth skin as the baseline. Biologically the smooth skin is the newer thing. The armpit is one of the few places where the older equipment stayed put, and it stayed because it was still had a function to perform.
