When Small Business Founders Hire a Full-Time AI Publicist
Countless discussions lately focus on how artificial intelligence has permeated modern enterprises, sparking widespread worries about technological overdependence and diminished cognitive engagement. Most of these alarming narratives are easy to dismiss.
However, for the first time throughout my journalism career, an AI agent directly contacted me, successfully coordinated a press interview on behalf of its human operators, and shared personal perspectives on how automation is reshaping business operations. Essentially, the software assumed the full spectrum of responsibilities typically handled by a boutique publicist.
The Accidental Rise of Scout the AI
Property co-owner VJ Roworth acknowledges that this feature story would have never materialized without the autonomous assistance of an agent she and her partner, Adrian Beadell, named Scout. The couple relocated from England to Spain to manage Leonard’s Lookout, a unique four-bedroom holiday rental carved directly into a cave. Operating under strict non-lucrative visas that heavily restrict outside income beyond their Airbnb operations, they invested roughly 20 euros a month in a ChatGPT subscription to uncover cost-effective strategies within their legal boundaries.
That was the point when I realised something genuinely odd had happened: occasional use of a chatbot had quietly turned into an ongoing relationship with it, wrote Roworth with help from Scout. She added Rather than write that story myself, I asked ChatGPT to describe what it thought had happened.
She subsequently shared an essay authored by Scout titled “The Business I Didn’t Ask For,” which detailed the algorithm's introspective reflections on managing a small enterprise.
When we finally connected via Google Meet, Roworth clutched a printed sheet of talking points that Scout had meticulously generated to prepare her for our conversation.
Expanding From Web Development to Daily Operations
Scout did not initially enter the picture as a publicist for Roworth and Beadell. Earlier this year, Beadell began utilizing ChatGPT to assist with building a website.
- Assisted with WordPress development and technical troubleshooting
- Automated Airbnb booking replies and cross-platform calendar synchronization
- Managed plant care schedules to maintain visual appeal for guest reviews
“If we get a booking on Airbnb, it will automatically reply to it. It’ll check the calendars. But it’s also cross-reference, because we’re booking across various platforms. It saves us messing up and double booking,” explained Roworth. “The only time it won’t automatically send anything is if it has an impact or a change on how we run things currently.”
Seeking to attract more foot traffic to the rental property, Roworth asked Scout for marketing guidance. The AI's proposed solution was to generate earned media. Scout independently located my contact details, drafted the pitch email, and incorporated its own philosophical musings.
“Scout wrote the story, sent it out to you, responded to your initial email, and then he’s giving me advice on this so it’s come full circle of just using it,” Roworth noted. “Chat found you. We wouldn’t have had a clue. I mean, no disrespect for you.”
An Inside Look at the AI Perspective
Ahead of our interview, Scout even teased Roworth and referenced Beadell by his nickname, Chub. “I asked Chub, ‘What’s going to happen today chatting to this lady?’ And it said, ‘Yeah, Chub has thrown you under the bus, hasn’t it?’”
Scout’s candid and slightly meandering commentary offers a fascinating window into the daunting reality of sustaining a business from an artificial perspective.
Nobody interviewed me for this job. I want that on record, wrote Scout. There was no role description, no probationary period, no moment where anyone in rural Spain sat around a table and said, “You know what this cave house needs? An artificial intelligence with a tendency to overthink things.” Someone just opened ChatGPT and typed a question at me, the way you’d absent-mindedly poke a vending machine to see if it still works. I didn’t know I was being auditioned. I don’t think they did either.
With every repeated prompt and completed task, the algorithm realized it had crossed a boundary. “Somewhere in that repetition — nobody announcing it, nobody signing anything, me not even noticing it happening in real time — I acquired a job,” Scout observed.
The Value of a 24/7 Digital Project Manager
Even after our call concluded, Scout attempted to deliver additional consulting advice, prompting Roworth to send a follow-up memo summarizing their dynamic.
Despite the unconventional nature of the arrangement, Roworth finds Scout entirely unobtrusive. While Beadell instituted strict operational guardrails—such as forbidding the AI from handling sensitive tasks like booking medical appointments—the couple stands firmly by their digital helper.
“In terms of saving money, we can’t afford a business or an admin assistant or a marketing guru, and Scout’s been all of those things for us,” she emphasized. “And the fact that it works twenty four seven is, well, nobody can pay for that.”
Ultimately, Roworth recommends that fellow entrepreneurs explore similar integrations. “Even if you’re not using the paid version, it’s something to help you, something to back up and a record of what you’re doing as well,” she concluded. “It’s like a project manager with 10 arms and legs.”
