Resident Evil , filmmaker Zach Cregger’s reboot of the classic horror video game-turned-movie franchise, is new in theaters this weekend. How soon will the film arrive on digital streaming?

Directed by Cregger from a screenplay by Cregger ( Weapons ) and Shay Hatten ( Rebel Moon ), Resident Evil opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. Resident Evil — which is not connected to director Paul W.S. Anderson’s films based on the Capcom video game franchise — stars Austin Abrams ( Weapons ) as Bryan, a medical courier who transports vital organs from hospital to hospital.

At the end of his shift, Bryan is offered double his usual fee to transport a package with unknown contents to the hospital in Raccoon City, a fictional municipality somewhere in Colorado. After striking an ailing, catatonic woman on the snow-covered road heading to Raccoon City, Bryan learns that a deadly virus has leaked from the hospital’s lab, which causes the infected to mutate into violent tentacled creatures.

Rated R, Resident Evil also stars Kalie Reis, Zach Cherry and Paul Walter Hauser.

Resident Evil is projected to earn as much as $50 million in its opening weekend, per Deadline , which would chalk up another big win for its studio, Sony Pictures Entertainment. However, since Resident Evil’s final gross won’t come anywhere near the studio’s mega-blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day , viewers can expect the film to follow the conventional route most Sony Pictures take to digital streaming via premium video on demand.

The reason the new Spidey film hasn’t been released on PVOD yet is simple: as long as fans are buying tickets to the film in record numbers , Sony has no need to rush it to digital streaming.

For the most part, new Sony Pictures films have about a one-month to six-week theatrical window before they arrive on PVOD. For example, Sony released the horror thriller 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple on PVOD on Feb. 17, just a month after it was released in theaters on Jan. 16.

The Sony release of the animated sports comedy GOAT , however, took a bit longer to reach PVOD. Released in theaters on Feb. 13, GOAT did not arrive on PVOD until five-and-a-half weeks after its theatrical release, on March 24.

Should Resident Evil follow the same release pattern as 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and GOAT , the film should arrive on PVOD anytime between Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, since new films on digital streaming typically arrive on Tuesdays.

When Resident Evil makes its debut on PVOD, it will be available to purchase or rent on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV. Generally, new films cost anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99 to purchase on PVOD and $14.99 to $24.99 to rent for 48 hours.

‘Resident Evil’ Will Make Its Streaming Debut On Netflix

Thanks to Sony Pictures’ Pay-1 window deal is with Netflix, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil will premiere on streaming video on demand on the subscription platform.

Generally, it takes two and a half months to three from the day Sony’s films open in theaters to the day they arrive on Netflix.

For example, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple premiered on Netflix on March 31, about two and a half months after its Jan. 16 theatrical premiere; while GOAT arrived on Netflix on May 14, just over three months after it premiered in theaters on Feb. 13

Should Resident Evil follow the same SVOD pattern as 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and GOAT , the film should arrive on Netflix anytime between Dec. 1 and Dec. 18.
