Mike Flanagan is returning to the world of Stephen King with Carrie , a brand new adaptation of King’s classic horror novel arriving on Prime Video just in time for Halloween.

This is hardly the first time Carrie has been adapted for the screen — Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie remains a horror classic — but it is the first time King’s novel has been turned into a full television series. Flanagan, the filmmaker behind The Haunting of Hill House , Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep , has eight episodes to expand on Carrie White’s tragic story and bring it into the social-media age. Given how much I loved Midnight Mass (which you should watch if you loved Widow’s Bay !) I’m pretty excited for this one.

Here’s when Carrie comes out on Prime Video, the complete Season 1 episode schedule, cast, Rotten Tomatoes score and everything else you need to know.

What Time Does Carrie Come Out On Prime Video?

Carrie premieres on Prime Video on Wednesday, October 7 at 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET.

Unlike many streaming series that release episodes weekly, all eight episodes of Carrie Season 1 drop at the same time , so viewers can binge the entire series immediately. I admit, I’m a little bummed about this as I really enjoy writing weekly recaps for these types of shows, but at least this can be your new October binge.

Here’s what that translates to in your time zone:

Carrie Season 1 At-A-Glance

Flanagan writes and executive produces the series and directs four of its eight episodes. Stephen King also serves as an executive producer. That’s quite the combination of creative forces.

Carrie tells the story of Carrie White (Summer H. Howell), a sheltered teenage girl raised by her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan).

After the sudden death of her father forces Carrie out of the isolation of her home and into public high school, she finds herself navigating a brutal new world of bullying, social media and adolescent cruelty. At the same time, Carrie begins discovering that she possesses mysterious telekinetic powers.

It’s a modernized take on Stephen King’s 1974 novel, shifting some of the story’s bullying into the age of smartphones, viral videos and social media while still building toward the bloody climax anyone familiar with Carrie knows is coming.

This makes me think of Cobra Kai , ironically, and Johnny Lawrence getting upset that bullies can bully people online. When he was a kid you had to bully people to their faces!

In any case, Prime Video describes the eight-part series as an expansion of King’s novel that explores the everyday choices that eventually build toward one catastrophic night.

King’s Carrie was his first published novel and helped launch what would become one of the most successful careers in modern fiction. The book was famously adapted into Brian De Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, followed by several other adaptations, including the 2013 movie starring Chloë Grace Moretz.

Flanagan is no stranger to King adaptations either. He previously directed Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep and has long been developing an adaptation of King’s massive Dark Tower series.

The Carrie series is also apparently tied to The Institute on MGM+ and part of a broader “Stephen King” universe that’s taking shape, though I’m not sure if this includes the It prequel Welcome to Derry .

How Many Episodes Of Carrie Are There?

Carrie Season 1 consists of eight episodes, all of which release on Prime Video on Wednesday, October 7.

Here’s the complete episode list:

There’s no weekly release schedule to worry about this time around. If you want to watch the entire season on opening day, Prime Video is giving you all eight episodes at once.

Who Is In The Cast Of Carrie ?

Summer H. Howell leads the series as Carrie White. Prime Video says Howell was selected after more than 1,000 actors auditioned for the role.

  • Summer H. Howell as Carrie White
  • Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White
  • Siena Agudong as Sue Snell
  • Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen
  • Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross
  • Josie Totah as Tina Blake
  • Arthur Conti as Billy Nolan
  • Thalia Dudek as Emaline
  • Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin
  • Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle

There are quite a few interesting names here. Samantha Sloyan has already worked with Flanagan on Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club , while Amber Midthunder starred in the excellent Predator prequel Prey . Horror fans will obviously know Matthew Lillard from Scream , Scooby-Doo and more recently as William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy’s .

What Is Carrie’s Rotten Tomatoes Score?

Carrie is off to a strong start with critics.

The series currently has an 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on more than 70 reviews. The site’s critical consensus praises Flanagan for expanding the original story with more compassion and giving the material a modern update.

Of course, even with a solid RT score the question everyone is invariably asking right now is: Do we really need another version of Carrie ?

The 1976 Brian De Palma adaptation remains an all-time horror classic with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score , while the 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz sits at just 51% .

Flanagan’s version appears to be landing much closer to the former than the latter, at least with critics, so it’ll be interesting to see what the fan consensus is.

Is Carrie Worth Watching?

I haven’t watched the full series yet – honestly, the screener quality was so poor that I decided to wait for it to come out – but the early reviews are certainly encouraging. I’ll give it a watch and report back.

There was always going to be some skepticism surrounding another Carrie adaptation. Brian De Palma’s movie is one of the great Stephen King adaptations, the very definition of iconic, and King’s original novel is also quite short, which makes me think an 8-episode series will be filled with expanded lore and, perhaps, severe padding.

Still, Mike Flanagan has proved that he can do great TV shows and I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Flanagan has already proven himself particularly adept at adapting Stephen King, while shows like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass demonstrate his knack for taking horror stories and expanding them into character-driven television.

The 85% Rotten Tomatoes score certainly helps. Critics have praised Summer H. Howell’s performance as Carrie and the way the series expands on King’s characters, though some reviews argue that the story is stretched too thin or that the modern updates blunt some of the original novel’s horror.

Either way, Carrie is easily one of the more interesting horror releases arriving
