MobLand Season 2 returns this Friday with its second episode, following last week’s bloody premiere and the introduction of a dangerous array of new enemies for the dysfunctional Harrigan family to contend with (not to mention one another).

Episode 2, titled “Song 2,” picks up as Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) becomes increasingly unstable, Maeve (Helen Mirren) continues weaving plans of her own and Harry (Tom Hardy) continues juggling a family crisis with an increasingly dangerous gang war. Death and divorce are in the air, and it’s a grand old mess.

What Is MobLand Season 2 Episode 2 About?

The official synopsis reads:

"With Conrad’s self-control slipping, Maeve makes plans of her own while Jan hits Harry with a hard truth; smelling blood, Frankie and Tattersall circle like sharks."

That’s particularly bad news for the Harrigans. Colin Tattersall (Toby Jones) promised to find a “paladin” for Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer) last week and settled on Frankie Cooper (Johnny Flynn), a volatile London drug lord who looks poised to become Harry’s opposite number this season, though we still know next to nothing about him.

Meanwhile, Conrad is hardly helping matters, "starting wars with our allies” as Harry put it. Conrad’s feud with Kevin (Paddy Considine) is already tearing the Harrigan family apart, exactly as Kat intended, while Maeve continues to operate according to her own mysterious agenda.

The above teaser picks up several threads from the premiere. Gina’s disappearance remains a major problem for Harry, while Eddie Harrigan (Anson Boon) appears to remain involved with her despite Maeve’s warnings. Maeve also appears to be arranging some kind of attempt at reconciliation, perhaps with Seraphina, though you can never trust a thing Maeve says.

Most importantly, the trailer makes it pretty clear that Frankie isn’t going to remain a mysterious background player for long.

MobLand Season 2 Release Schedule

Unlike some streaming series, and just about everything on Netflix, MobLand won’t arrive all at once. Paramount+ is releasing one new episode every Friday for ten weeks, with the Season 2 finale landing November 20. This means that I’ll be able to review each episode as they come out here on this blog . Be sure to follow along here and on my YouTube channel as I’d love to hear your thoughts on the show as well!

Interestingly, the first two confirmed Season 2 episode titles are both famous songs: The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and Blur’s “Song 2.” Several later episode titles currently listed by Rotten Tomatoes and TVMaze also follow that pattern, though Paramount has not officially posted those titles yet. Many of the episodes from Season 1 were also song titles.

What Happened In MobLand Season 1?

Major spoilers for Season 1 ahead.

Season 1 revolved around the increasingly bloody war between two London crime families: the Harrigans, led by Conrad Harrigan (Pierce Brosnan) and his formidable wife Maeve (Helen Mirren), and the rival Stevenson family, led by Richie Stevenson (Geoff Bell). Caught in the middle was Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), the Harrigans’ supremely capable fixer and longtime friend of Conrad’s son Kevin (Paddy Considine). Harry’s competency is rivaled only by his saint-like patience, which he must tap into regularly given the nature of his employers.

The uneasy peace between the families collapsed after Kevin’s supposedly wayward son Eddie (Anson Boon) went out partying with Richie’s son Tommy Stevenson. Tommy subsequently disappeared and eventually turned up dead. Harry’s attempts to smooth things over are dashed by Conrad and Maeve’s increasingly erratic leadership. Things . . . escalated rather quickly.

By the finale, Harry discovered that Harrigan attorney O’Hara Delaney was Richie’s mole, having backed what she thought would be the winning horse. Harry turned that betrayal against Richie, luring the Stevensons into an ambush that ended with Richie and O’Hara dead and effectively brought the Harrigan-Stevenson war to a close. But victory only exposed the much more dangerous conflict brewing inside the Harrigan family itself, and invited in new threats from outside to fill the power vacuum.

The Harrigan family tree was one casualty of Season 1’s violence. As Kevin finally confronts his father in prison, asserting his dominance at last, Maeve revealed an enormous family secret to Eddie: Kevin isn’t actually his biological father. Conrad is. And things get twistier still, since Maeve isn’t Eddie’s biological grandmother at all. Eddie is now another potential claimant to the Harrigan empire. Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon), meanwhile, attracted the attention of the mysterious and extremely powerful Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer) to whom she owes her life, thanks to Harry’s quick thinking.

This placed Harry directly in Kat’s crosshairs, where he found himself facing the kind of offer you can’t refuse: A better job, but only if he’d betray the Harrigans. Harry politely turned Kat down. She was none too pleased.

The season ends on a wild cliffhanger after Harry, victorious, returns home and gets in an argument with his wife Jan (Joanne Froggatt) who accidentally stabs him with a kitchen knife. Harry is left bleeding out as the credits roll.

While the Harrigans technically won their war against the Stevensons, they enter Season 2 divided, vulnerable and surrounded by ambitious enemies, corrupt police and internal strife. Juicy material for a second season, no doubt. The long-suffering Harry will have no time to rest anytime soon.

Is MobLand Worth Watching?

I was a bit late to the show, but I absolutely loved it once I got going and Season 2 is already just as good , and has the potential to be even better. Hardy is a great central protagonist, calmly fixing the myriad problems that both his enemies and employers cause. Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren really steal the show, however, even if their Irish accents are a bit wonky. (Yes, I know Brosnan is Irish, but that is still not his natural accent). Maeve is such a great, wicked, half-mad witch of a character. I love her. I’ve joked that I’d happily play a GTA-style video game starring Conrad and Maeve.

Beyond these three, you have such a fantastic cast. Paddy Considine will always have a special place in my heart for his tremendous role as King Viserys I in House of the Dragon , and he was terrific in Season 1 of MobLand as well.

If you enjoy gritty UK crime dramas, you’d be crazy to miss this one. It’s also ten episodes per season, which is almost twice the length of a normal BBC crime drama (which are usually capped at six episodes). While Guy Ritchie is involved in the series, this is a much darker, more grounded crime drama than Ritchie’s Netflix show, The Gentlemen, and while it’s not as funny, that grounded nature serves it well. I can’t say whether Season 2 will be as good as Season 1, but as of this publication its Rotten Tomatoes score is at 90% with critics , fully 13% higher than Season 1. So that’s good news!

Joining the cast this season are Johnny Flynn as Frankie, Ophelia Lovibond as Kavanagh and Mayor of Kingstown star Tobi Bamtefa as Dog. Flynn’s Frankie appears to be the most significant newcomer, emerging as a potentially dangerous new adversary for Harry and the Harrigans. ( Harry and the Harrigans would have made a great name for this show, actually).

When Does MobLand Season 2, Episode 2 Release In Every Time Zone?

Will There Be A MobLand Season 3?

Paramount announced that MobLand would return for a third season on Thursday, September 3. The renewal announcement keeps details to a minimum. We know that Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren will return but we don’t know when. Season 1 came out in March of 2025 so Season 2 is roughly 18 months later, which is pretty quick for modern television. With a release cadence like that we could potentially get Season 3 in late 2027 or early 2028.
