What Is Ted Lasso Season 4, Episode 7 About?

The official logline for tonight’s episode reads: “Alice and Ted try stepping outside their comfort zones. Zelda helps with a new problem at Richmond.”

That certainly makes sense after last week’s episode. Alice’s suspension may be over, but things remain tense between her and the team after she discovered Gemma had shared their private conversation with the other players. Ted, meanwhile, ended New Year’s Eve with Michelle on much better terms and returned home to find the new “Believe” banner she and Henry had made for him.

Exactly what stepping outside his comfort zone means for Ted remains to be seen, while the reference to Zelda suggests the Lady Greyhounds have yet another complication headed their way.

Season 4 consists of ten episodes, which means we’re officially entering the home stretch. Only three episodes remain after Episode 7, with the season finale scheduled for October 7. Apple has also revealed the title of next week’s episode: “Follow the Anger.”

Is Ted Lasso Worth Watching?

As with so many other once-great shows, Ted Lasso caught (lassoed?) lightning in a bottle with its debut season, and then clearly didn’t know what to do with all that crackling energy. Season 2 was an attempt to demystify Ted, who was so unflappable and good in Season 1, he was basically an anomaly in modern television, which skews toward cynical. He was, in many respects, the Elwood P. Dowd of our time.

Season 2 tried to make him more human, give him anxiety attacks and emotional depth. I understand the impulse, but it was a mistake, robbing Ted of the one thing that made him so unique in modern programming. There were still many enjoyable aspects of Season 2, but the overarching plot of Nate’s resentment was too bleak for a show about hope – a show about slapping a Believe sign on a locker room wall and meaning it. The earnestness and sincerity were muddied, and the show wanted to have its cake and eat it, too, but the result was a mix of cynicism and treacly optimism that felt forced instead of natural.

Seasons 2 and 3 also worked hard to make the show an ensemble affair, giving more and more screen time to the side characters and losing any discernible thread in the process. Season 4 is something of a reboot, giving Ted a brand new team and a new parade of challenges (such as team members who can get pregnant) but it’s also the lowest-scoring season with audiences (down to just 70%) and second-lowest with critics (88%). Whether it’s worth watching depends on how much you enjoy Ted Lasso and the gang, but for me this show was never really the same after Season 1.
