Ultrahuman has launched a research platform that lets users of its smart rings sign up to wellness studies. It’s called Pulsomics.

The wearables maker has already contributed to major health studies but Pulsomics is intended to make it easier and clearer for Ultrahuman smart ring customers to let their data be used in such studies.

“Pulsomics enables any Ultrahuman user to contribute to science, and to the creation of models that can predict everything from how much sleep you need to an individual’s organ function,” says Mohit Kumar, Ultrahuman CEO.

Upon registering, you will be asked for more pieces of personal data than would typically be requested when using a wearable. These include “age, sex, height, weight, ethnicity and skin tone information,” and the latter is needed to help compensate for how optical heart rate reader hardware’s signals are affected by skin tone.

“This will be the very first at scale, free-living set of studies where we collect longitudinal wearable data from our users alongside extremely valuable user-provided context to that wearable data like personal lifestyle/medical history, family history, demographics, and sometimes day-level journaling. This would unlock the development of foundational models with labeled population-level data,” says Vinayak Narasimhan, Ultrahuman’s head of science.

One clear concern when sharing health data is how it is used and stored. Ultrahuman claims to have “gold standard” privacy for your information.

“Data is de-identified before it is used, is never sold, and is never shared with advertisers, employers or insurers. Anything published uses aggregated data across many de-identified participants,” it says.

What Are Ultrahuman’s Pulsomics Trials?

Three trials are available in this first stage of the Pulsomics platform. One looks at sleep — in particular at how much sleep specific individuals need — another at VO2 Max, while the last is a “glucose metaoblism study” that links wearable health data to a “recent blood test panel,” so it has some more specific requirements.

Other studies coming in the future include one on cardiovascular load and a “longitudinal sleep study.”

At present the Ultrahuman Pulsomics platform is open to users of Ring Air and Ring Pro smart rings, so does not include owners of the company’s Home sleep monitor .

“The mass adoption of powerful consumer wearables such as the Ultrahuman Ring enables us to train models on real-world data across body types, ethnicities, and cultures, creating more accurate and fairer health features than ever before,” says Ultrahumn CEO Kumar.

Ultrahuman already publishes nuggets from its wearables data research on a Bytes section of its website — including a recent analysis of resting heart rate versus recovery.

Ultrahuman is currently shipping its Ultrahuman Ring Pro to U.S. customers, for $479.
