Trump-Meloni Feud Reignites After President’s ‘Restraining Order’ Post
President Donald Trump appeared to reignite his feud with former ally Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with a mocking post on Truth Social Sunday, days before the two leaders are set to attend a key NATO summit in Turkey.
In a post on Truth Social , Trump shared an image of himself and Meloni with the caption, “RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED.”
The post was shared on Sunday afternoon with no additional context, amid another weekend posting spree that was mainly focused on his family and on unverified claims about large crowd sizes at his 250th Independence Day events.
The Italian Prime Minister has not reacted to the post, but Italy’s Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto, was asked about it in an interview on Monday and said he had “no reaction” and that his fundamental goal is to “maintain relations” with a “key ally” like America.
Crosetto insisted that the relationship between the two countries is not tied to any individuals.
Opposition politician Carlo Calenda attacked Trump on X, calling the president a “despicable two-bit bully,” and expressed “full solidarity” with Meloni.
What Do We Know About Trump’s Feud With Meloni?
After the G7 Summit last month, the president sparked controversy by claiming that Meloni “begged me to take a photo with her.” Speaking to NBC News the president claimed the Italian prime minister wanted the photo badly and added, “I could have skipped it, but I felt sorry for her.” Referring to Meloni as a “big fan” of his, Trump said he doesn’t want her as a fan because “she was not there — along with the NATO group — having to do with the Strait [of Hormuz]." The president’s remarks triggered an immediate pushback from the Italian government, with the country’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceling a planned U.S. visit. Meloni said she was “stunned” by Trump’s remarks and chided the President for behaving poorly with “his own allies,” adding “It’s not, after all, the first time this has happened.” Despite the criticism, Trump doubled down on Truth Social, saying Meloni asked “over and over” and claimed she was “doing poorly in Italy with her level of popularity.”
The relationship between Trump and Meloni, also a right-wing populist leader, began to fray earlier this year as Trump criticized European NATO allies for not joining the U.S.’s war with Iran. Meloni first criticized Trump after he turned his ire on Pope Leo XIV for criticizing the Iran War. Meloni called Trump’s attacks on the Catholic leader “unacceptable,” and the president said he was “shocked” by her comments and added: “I thought she had courage, I was wrong.”
The leaders of NATO are set to gather in Ankara for a summit on Tuesday and Wednesday. The meeting comes at a perilous time for the alliance, which has been the target of repeated attacks from Trump, especially over its members' reluctance to assist the U.S. war effort in Iran. Both Trump and Meloni are scheduled to attend , along with other top NATO leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
