Collectors and enthusiasts can finally secure one of the most remarkable Lego gift-with-purchase (GWP) items through both online and physical retail channels. Officially unveiled just last week, the Build, Paint and Play! (40889) set is currently being bundled at no extra cost for qualifying purchases reaching $130, £115, or €130, though this promotional window closes definitively on November 8.

Hailing from the triumph of the 2025 Build Your Hobby competition, this release delivers a brilliantly self-referential concept by pairing classic plastic injection-molded models with the world's most renowned construction elements. Conceived by MOC designer Topi “Doomslizer” Kari, the core vision remains remarkably intact from its original pitch.

Reflecting on his motivation for the 235-piece initial concept, Kari noted that crafting miniature model kits serves as his ultimate outlet for self-expression and relaxation.

My build features all the essentials to make a model come to life. A sprue, a cutting tool, glue, paint and brushes. Also it features a cutting board to work on and a decal sheet to add fine details. Finally my build features a finished miniature model.

As a finished display item, the resulting product is nothing short of breathtaking. Although Lego’s master designers streamlined the overall brick inventory by roughly a third, the creation stands as an exceptional tribute to traditional hobbyist brands like Airfix, Revell, and Tamiya. In a wonderful nod to the creator, Lego even inscribed Kari's first name directly onto the brick-built glue bottle.

Minor friction points do exist, notably the inclusion of eight stickers—with three dedicated specifically to edge measurements. Enthusiasts may find themselves reaching for physical rulers to secure exact alignment. Nevertheless, given the limited production run for a GWP, traditional printed elements were understandably off the table.

Die-hard collectors might experience slight disappointment that the included teal astronaut minifigure utilizes a previously released colorway, yet astute builders will quickly spot the highly sought-after grey astronaut components integrated into the display frame, items certain to surface on secondary marketplaces soon.

The creative potential unlocked by leveraging the MOC community for official GWPs is immense. Expanding this collaborative approach to future high-profile releases could redefine fan engagement, setting a high benchmark for creative partnerships moving forward.
