The first of the two business days for the Tokyo Toy Show was today, and there were a lot of new figures and toys on display.

Firstly, the previously covered Proplica G Controller and Metal Robot Damashii Gundam Double X looked amazing in the flesh. The G Controller is nicely beefy in terms of its size, and the Gundam Double X was beautifully done as well.

Secondly, there was the announcement of Gundam teaming up with Hololive , with a special Metal Robot Damashii Nu Gundam and Sazabi already available for pre-orders via the Premium Bandai Webshop.

Thirdly, there was the announcement of a new Metal Structure Gundam Mk.II from Zeta Gundam . These are extremely expensive and very large toys, which all have multiple panels that open up, along with lots of LEDs lighting up the mobile suit’s eyes, among other things. We’ve already had the Nu Gundam and Sazabi from Char’s Counterattack given the Metal Structure treatment, so I am glad this toy line is expanding already.

Following that, Takara Tomy had a great showing, with lots of Shinkalion and Transformers toys. There are also lots of new Toyrise figures planned, from Raijinoh to Wataru and Granzort ; these were also nicely sized and looked very close to their anime versions.

Another interesting trend is that lots of older-styled toys are making a comeback . With re-releases of classic Chogokin-type toys from the 70s and 80s. While this is clearly aimed at an older demographic, I get the feeling that a lot of younger collectors will also like these a lot.

There was also a small booth showing the return of smaller versions of the Kore Ja Nai Robo (or “this is the wrong robo”), which was a wonderful joke played on kids from the 70s who grew up with parents who would literally buy them the wrong mecha toy.

In any case, this year’s Tokyo Toy Show was nicely done, if a bit more subdued than previous years. Here’s hoping there will be more on show next year.

This year’s Tokyo Toy Show is open to the public this Saturday and Sunday and is hosted at Tokyo Big Sight , and tickets can be purchased here for either day at 2,000 yen (or around $9 at the current exchange rate).
