Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to my deeper dive into today’s Connections answers. The idea behind this is to help clear things up for anyone who isn’t sure how today’s groups fit together.

I’m going to assume that you’ve already beaten today’s game. We’re going straight into spoiler territory here. So, consider this your one and only warning .

Here are today’s NYT Connections answers explained (and any red herrings I spot) for Tuesday, September 1:

Today’s NYT Connections Answers Explained

Connections – Yellow Group

🟨 "I promise!" (CROSS MY HEART, FOR REAL, ON GOD, PINKY SWEAR)

These are all just ways of saying “I promise” or “honestly.” ON GOD (or ”ong”) is a more contemporary expression, but it’s been around for at least a couple of decades .

Connections – Green Group

🟩 long, skinny things often seen together (ARROW, GOLF CLUB, PICK-UP STICK, SPAGHETTO)

This is at least the third mention of Pick-Up Sticks in Connections over the last year. It’s a game that involves dropping a pile of sticks onto a surface. The aim is to pick up certain sticks without disturbing the rest of them. Whoever collects the most sticks or earns the most points (the sticks are often color-coded) wins.

A SPAGHETTO is a single strand of spaghetti.

🟦 private investigators of fiction (HERCULE POIROT, MIKE HAMMER, SAM SPADE, SHERLOCK HOLMES)

HERCULE POIROT is arguably Agatha Christie’s most famous character. The Belgian detective appeared in dozens of novels and short stories. Those have been adapted for the screen many times, most recently in three films starring Kenneth Branagh (who also directed them) as Poirot – Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile and A Haunting in Venice.

This is the first I have heard of MIKE HAMMER, who is a creation of author Mickey Spillane. According to Wikipedia , Hammer is a violent private detective who isn’t afraid to put killers down himself.

SAM SPADE is the protagonist of Dashiell Hammett’s novel, The Maltese Falcon. Humphrey Bogart portrayed him in a 1941 film adaptation.

SHERLOCK HOLMES is probably the most famous fictional detective of them all.

Connections – Purple Group

🟪 staring with words of intention (AIMEE MANN, HOPE DIAMOND, PLANETARIUM, WISHY-WASHY)

  • AIMEE MANN > aim
  • HOPE DIAMOND > hope
  • PLANETARIUM > plan
  • WISHY-WASHY > wish

AIMEE MANN is an alt-rock singer-songwriter. Her biggest hit was “Voices Carry,” a U.S. top-ten single with her former band, 'Til Tuesday:

The HOPE DIAMOND is a famous, large diamond.

To be WISHY-WASHY is to act in an uncertain way.

Connections – Red Herrings

CROSS MY HEART, GOLF CLUB, SAM SPADE and HOPE DIAMOND all end with references to playing card suits: hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds.
