The Avatar: The Last Airbender series has had an interesting road over the last 21 years. The original is often considered one of the best animated series of all time, which was followed up by The Legend of Korra in 2012, a few years after the disastrous The Last Airbender movie by M. Night Shyamalan. Then, 14 years later, the series was adapted into a live-action Netflix show. This year there was an animated movie on Paramount+, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, and now this week? An entirely new animated series, Avatar: Seven Havens.

I suppose it depends on your circles, but the first new Avatar animated series in 12 years seems to be arriving this week, Friday, October 9 on Paramount+, with relatively little fanfare. The show is set 225 years after the events of The Legend of Korra and features a new, younger Avatar named Pavi, an earthbender. Here’s the synopsis:

“After a world-shattering disaster, a young Earthbender learns she’s the post-Korra Avatar; now seen as a harbinger of doom, she and her twin race to save the Seven Havens while pursued by humans and spirits alike.”

How might Seven Havens compare to all these other Netflix projects in terms of quality? Here’s a timeline breakdown of scores:

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) – 100% critic score, 98% audience score, 9.3/10 IMDB
  • The Last Airbender (2010) – 5% critic score, 30% audience score, 3.9/10 IMDB
  • The Legend of Korra (2012) – 88% critic score, 78% audience score, 8.3/10 IMDB
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) - 66% critic score, 61% audience score, 7.1/10
  • Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (2026) – 90% critic score, 99% audience score, 7.7/10 IMDB
  • Avatar: Seven Havens (2026) – N/A

What can we make of this? Well, for one, the Avatar Aang movie from this year and this week’s Seven Havens are both made by the original creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Famously, both of them left development on the live-action Netflix series due to creative differences. Instead, they formed Avatar Studios and went back to Paramount for Avatar Aang and Seven Havens. Obviously, their involvement bodes extremely well for the new series. The show even has 13 episodes in its first season (book) like The Legend of Korra (the original series had 20-21, but those days are mostly behind us).

Even if it is flying under the radar in the general streaming space, it stands to reason Avatar: Seven Havens may break out past superfans and into the wider public, especially if it can be even close to the quality of the other three animated projects. I don’t think anyone is expecting a huge turnaround for the live-action Netflix show for its final season (I didn’t even bother watching season 2), but the franchise may have a long life ahead of it yet as we reach two decades of the universe.
