‘The Legend Of Korra’ Charts Higher Than ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ On Paramount+
It took about three hours for yet another split to form in the Avatar community after the release of Avatar: Seven Havens , the new mainline series that was released on Paramount+ last week, 14 years after The Legend of Korra, as some beleive the latter show has now been direspected . Interestingly, it’s worth noting that despite Avatar: Seven Havens being brand new, it’s The Legend of Korra that is ranking above it on Netflix’s top 10 list, at least where it is ranking.
Neither Seven Havens nor The Legend of Korra ranks in the top 10 list in the US, which is true in a few other countries like Canada, the UK and Australia. South America is a big haven (no pun intended) for the Avatar fanbase, and in almost every instance, The Legend of Korra is higher than Seven Havens.
It is interesting to me that Avatar is not charting at all in some of those countries, suggesting a lack of interest in the franchise’s return. Though obviously the idea that a 14-year-old show like The Legend of Korra is outpacing Avatar: Seven Havens , which is just a week old.
What’s happening here? Obviously the idea is that many believe it’s time for a rewatch, in part because, despite taking place several hundred years later, The Legend of Korra is directly connected to Avatar: Seven Havens. In the new show, Korra is vilified as an Avatar who caused a cataclysm that destroyed the world, causing her to be hated and the entire concept of the Avatar feared.
This has resulted in some fans saying the storyline “disrespects” the beloved character of Korra (who, in the past, has not always been so beloved by some), without really waiting for any amount of context. It would seem fairly obvious that the pathway of Seven Havens will lead to the “true” story of what happened with Korra and see her vindicated, not that Avatar suddenly made her a supervillain out of nowhere. But fans don’t seem interested in being patient.
The pot was stirred further by comments from Korra voice actress Janet Varney, who said she was “shattered” when she saw how Korra was being portrayed as a villain in the new show:
“I sobbed through this pilot episode. I was shattered. I cannot emphasize it enough. I finished it, and my partner was like, ‘So?’ And I was like, ‘I can’t even tell you what happened. I’m so upset, crying.’
“And I was like, ‘I’m so worried about all the people that love Korra and already defend Korra.’ And I had to go back and watch with fresh eyes after I had deeply grieved.”
“I know we don’t know what will happen, and I want people to keep the faith, but who knows? But just for me, watching children talk about her as if she’s a monster was heartbreaking. I mean, it really hurt. I’m not her, but I know what she means to some people, and it just really hurt.”
While I can understand her reaction, at least she’s saying that she doesn’t know what will happen, and it’s genuinely hard to believe that fans aren’t giving the show a chance to explain. But alas, such is fandom. We’ll see what happens this week.
