As AI Levels the Playing Field, Human Difference Becomes the Greatest Asset
For years, the dominant question surrounding artificial intelligence has been rooted in a subtle, quiet anxiety: What will AI take from us?
Will it take our jobs? Our creative relevance? Our intellectual authority?
AI can already write, code, research, analyze, and create images with extraordinary speed. The assumption has been simple: as machine capabilities expand, human space must inevitably shrink.
But another possibility is beginning to emerge.
As AI makes competent writing, coding, research, analysis, and image-making available to almost everyone, competence itself becomes less distinctive. When millions of people can produce good work in seconds, something else becomes scarce: the perspective only you can bring to it.
And that shift could make the things that remain genuinely human far more valuable.
Judgment. Imagination. Taste. Lived context. Trust. Moral courage. The ability to ask an unexpected question, make an intuitive leap, recover from a mistake, or see something another person simply cannot see.
AI is leveling the playing field. But when everyone has access to increasingly powerful intelligence, human difference could become the ultimate premium.
So what, exactly, will make us valuable in the age of AI? I asked four people approaching that question from radically different worlds.
1. What If Intelligence Was Never What Made Us Special?
To understand where human value is moving, we have to start by dismantling a long-held myth about what made us special in the first place.
We have long treated intelligence as one of the things that makes humans exceptional. We were special because we could reason, calculate, invent, and solve problems better than other creatures. IQ tests, SAT scores, and academic credentials became the primary sorting mechanisms of human potential.
Then machines began beating us at some of the very things we used as evidence of our superiority.
Dr. Stephen Cave, Director of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, believes this technological shock is forcing a long-overdue philosophical reset.
"The idea that humans are uniquely intelligent — and therefore uniquely special — has been taking a battering from two sides over the past century," Cave points out. "On the one hand, we have been making increasingly smart machines that can beat us at games of intelligence like chess. But on the other hand, we have also been understanding how smart other species are — not just chimps and dolphins, but octopi, crows and ant colonies can all perform impressive cognitive feats."
That realization feels like a crisis only if your belief system is based on a hierarchy of intelligence with humans sitting comfortably at the peak.
"We’re having to realise that this worth doesn’t come from being the smartest entities around," Cave says. "If humans are worthy because we are the most intelligent, does that mean those who are more intelligent are worth more? I don’t think so. If humans are worthy because some of them have written great symphonies or developed insightful mathematical theories, are those who haven’t done those things less worthy? Again, I don’t think so."
Cave’s conclusion cuts to the heart of the matter: "We should not associate human value with any particular trait — whether intelligence or anything else. That immediately establishes a hierarchy, with those who have most of that trait at the top. Instead, we should recognise that all humans have intrinsic value, no matter what their traits and skills."
Perhaps AI isn't diminishing humanity. Perhaps it is forcing us to reconsider what humanity was worth in the first place.
And once intelligence is no longer the defining human advantage, a more practical question follows: what qualities become more valuable in the world AI is creating?
2. When AI Has All the Answers, Who Asks the Questions?
If machines can synthesize knowledge and deliver answers almost instantly, knowing the answer becomes less distinctive. Knowing what to ask becomes more valuable.
Sir Geoff Mulgan, author of the forthcoming Collective Stupidity (Princeton University Press, 2027), Professor of Collective Intelligence at University College London and former senior UK policy advisor, warns that our growing reliance on automated output poses a subtle threat to the very faculties we need most.
"The world is suffering from an imaginary crisis, a crisis of imagination," Mulgan observes. While people can readily imagine "technological futures or ecological disasters," he argues that "we find it very hard to imagine positive futures for society, health, welfare or democracy: AI seems to be worsening this vital human capacity."
The danger is that as we delegate more thinking to algorithms, we exercise our own critical faculties less.
"There are clear signs of cognitive decline — IQ, school test scores and measures of adult numeracy and literacy all seem to be falling," Mulgan notes. "This makes it easier for AI-powered tools to manipulate and deceive us, and makes it all the more important to rebuild our human critical faculties, and our ability to question AI."
The human premium is not raw information processing. It is the capacity for skepticism, original inquiry, and imaginative framing.

3. The Robot Makes a Mistake
Step into the studio of Sougwen Chung, and the abstract debate about artificial intelligence immediately becomes physical.
Chung, a TIME100 AI honoree and pioneering artist, draws live on canvas alongside multi-axis robotic arms driven by neural networks trained on two decades of Chung’s own hand-drawn marks.
Generative AI is extraordinarily good at producing polished results. But Chung is interested in something less perfect: what happens when the unexpected forces a human being to respond.
"In tech development, you don't poeticize error — it's always a bug," Chung explains. "Art taught me the opposite. When my first drawing machine deviated from its simulation, the error was a gift: it gave me something to adapt to. Without it, the system was just a mirror of my own gestures. Our imperfections made the work more interesting."
But Chung's response to the machine's error reveals something different: she experiences the disruption, interprets it, and decides that the mistake means something.
"Intuition, in performance, is the ability to answer something unexpected in real time and make the unplanned mark mean something," Chung says.
Chung points to another vital human dimension that software cannot replicate: duration and embodiment.
"When generation becomes instant, our relationship to the image changes — anyone can have a thousand images in a minute," Chung notes. "What can't be generated is duration, or embodiment: the time inside the process of mark making. Craft is inextricably linked to the body, and the decisions made through physical intuition, which is grounded in our own sense of time."
An image may be generated in two seconds. But Chung's art contains something different: the time spent making it, the physical decisions, the mistakes, and the human response to them.
4. The One Thing AI Can't Download: Your Life
Extend Chung’s concept of embodiment across a human lifetime, and you land on the ultimate source of human differentiation: lived context.
Large language models have been trained on extraordinary quantities of human-created text, imagery, and code. But the model has never had a childhood.
It has never fallen in love. It has never lost someone. It has never walked into a room and felt that it didn't belong. It has never risked humiliation, struggled with a body, raised a child, emigrated to another country, lost a job, changed its mind, or wondered what other people thought of it.
Those experiences aren't inefficiencies in human cognition. They are context.
When millions of professionals use the same foundational models, their outputs risk becoming increasingly similar. What differentiates them is what they bring to the machine that the machine didn't already have.
This is where Viktoria Modesta enters the story.
5. Viktoria Modesta: What If AI Is a Prosthetic for the Mind?
I recently featured Viktoria Modesta—bionic artist, futurist, and former MIT Media Lab Fellow—on my show AI for a Better World . Viktoria has spent her career challenging the assumption that a prosthetic limb should merely replace something that is missing. Instead, she transformed her bionic leg into an iconic symbol of artistic expression, identity, and future human possibility.
When she looks at artificial intelligence, she sees a provocative parallel.
"When I think about AI, this is where prosthetics started becoming the most interesting parallel," Modesta says. "We're talking about a technology that's able to support us, to amplify us, to fill in the blanks of our memory... If we think of AI as a prosthetic of the mind, we begin to alter our abilities on a new scale."
A physical prosthetic doesn't erase the individual using it. It extends what that person can do. Modesta asks us to imagine AI the same way.
"It's no longer just functional," Modesta observes. "This is a vehicle for our intention, a vehicle for our emotion, for our aspiration of what we would like to have for ourselves and the world."
Modesta offers a devastatingly simple example of what happens when we forget that human intention must drive the technology:
"If you have a resume by 20 people who all use the same models, there is no meaning. There is no differentiation. So what are my ideas? What is my lived experience? Which perspective did it give to me to have a contribution to something?"
The competitive question changes from, How good is your AI? to: What are you bringing to the AI that nobody else can?
Your history. Your taste. Your obsessions. Your scars. Your body. Your culture. Your values. Your imagination.
Taken together, these four perspectives point toward a Human Premium—not a measure of human worth, but a set of qualities likely to become more valuable as machine capability becomes more accessible:
- Ask Better Questions: Seeing the problem others haven't identified and knowing what is worth building.
- Exercise Judgment and Taste: Recognizing what is meaningful, beautiful, or true rather than merely competent.
- Use Human Intuition: Bringing physical experience, duration, and real-time adaptation to the creative process.
- Bring Your Lived Experience: Contributing the irreplaceable perspective forged by human struggle, context, and history.
- Take Responsibility: Standing behind consequential decisions when automated systems can take no moral accountability.
- Build Real Human Connection: Fostering authentic relationships and making another person feel genuinely understood.
None of these require rejecting AI. Quite the opposite.
The people who flourish will be those who learn to combine extraordinary machine capability with something equally important: an increasingly distinctive human point of view.
Don't Compete With the Machine
For much of the AI era, we've asked how humans can keep up with machines.
That is the wrong competition.
We aren't going to beat AI at being AI. And we shouldn't try.
The opportunity is to invest in the things that make us different: asking the question nobody else thought to ask, turning a mistake into an idea, making a difficult judgment, earning another person's trust, and bringing a lifetime of experience to a problem a machine has never lived.
Learning to use AI will matter.
Learning what not to outsource to it may matter even more.
Because in a world where everyone has access to artificial intelligence, the rarest advantage may ultimately be the one thing nobody else can bring to it:
