The season finale of The Boys has come and gone with some controversy, with fans making it the worst-scored episode of the season, part of a recent tradition of streaming viewers seeming to hate most series finales. The Boys will live on the form of two spinoffs, the upcoming Vought Rising , and the supposedly-still-happening The Boys Mexico . Gen V , which ran for two seasons, has been canceled. There could have been one more, however.

Speaking on the Armchair Expert Podcast with Dax Shepard, Chace Crawford talked about a spinoff for The Deep that he once pitched as a departure for the character:

“What if he’s a shitty actor and he’s kicked out, a D-List actor. You see him shooting a bad movie like Tropic Thunder, but it’s like Barry… He doesn’t have to be fully redeemed, but it would be fun to do a half-hour comedy.”

In the end (spoilers), The Deep dies after a fight with Starlight, though not by her hand. He ends up in the ocean and is mauled to death by his own former sea friends, who blame him for the death of his former octopus lover and a recent oil spill.

I was actually quite sad about The Deep’s death in The Boy s finale, even though every evil supe met their end from Oh Father to Homelander himself. He may have had it coming, but Crawford was so good as The Deep it was sort of sad to see him go out like that. His arc was fantastic, the total opposite of A-Train’s redemption pathway, and it is genuinely hard to separate Crawford from The Deep now.

A half-hour comedy starring The Deep would have had to be great; I see no other way it could have gone. I maintain he’s probably the best or at least the second-best portrayed character in the series, thanks to Crawford fully developing and embracing his loser idiot persona. Just fantastic work.

I do think Vought Rising looks good, at least judging by the most recent trailer. I also think that Jensen Ackles is great as Soldier Boy, almost too great, as he overshadowed Homelander for most of this past season. The Boys Mexico has always seemed a bit nebulous with no real details, but the fact that Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are involved is very reassuring.

I still think they should uncancel Gen V .
