The Applied AI Reset: Rebuilding How We Live And Work
Headlines today would have you believe AI is dismantling our workforce, consuming all our resources, and posing a deadly threat to our way of life. While much of this narrative is hyperbole, it stems from a genuine structural fracture: technology has now outpaced our institutional and cultural operating systems. We are experiencing fundamental and foundational shifts in how we live, work, learn and play. To add to this there is this unprecedented convergence of digital and physical AI, robotics, and energy breakthroughs accelerating that change in ways we are only just starting to see.
History shows it takes roughly the first quarter of the new century for these structural shifts to fully take hold. We saw a similar cultural and technological transition, accompanied by rage style media panic, in both the 19th (steam engine, factories) and 20th centuries ( electricity, standardization, mass production). Though the 21st century officially began in 2001, the building blocks of the 21st-century economy and the simultaneous dismantling of the 20th-century models has taken about 25 years to become fully visible and no longer deniable. Over the next decade most of the future building I have been part of will be more visible in our daily work and life. Yet, here we are in 2026, attempting to navigate a digital-first economy using a labor and cultural framework engineered in the 1920s around the industrial factory floor.
The 100-Year Structural Mismatch
Look around: from school curricula, the school summer break, the 9-to-5 workweek, the nuclear family, government structures, banking to medical appointment services and scheduling were manufactured during the early 1920s factory and farm life. For example: school closed for the summer so the kids could help on the farm. Today that that world no longer exists.
Every thing we have been ignoring will have its AI light shine on it. We’re not ready for what’s about to come and we see it daily. I am living and working in this future state and so I feel it’s necessary to name it and walk you through it. Nowhere is this mismatch clearer than in the modern office-based knowledge work, which has permanently and digitally transformed. Because corporate structures, hierarchies and workplaces have failed to evolve alongside this shift, the resulting organizational tension and anxiety is now conveniently and inaccurately blamed on AI. AI is an amplifier of what works well and what doesn’t work at all.
A clear example is how CEOs celebrate Return-to-Office mandates to get teams back together in person for productivity gains, while simultaneously citing AI as the reason for mass layoffs. Ironically RTO mandates in reality mean staff are forced to commute to work for about an hour each way like its 2019! Only it’s 2026, and now they perform the exact same digital sorting tasks via video calls and Slack messages they do at home, but now in a new open plan office with headphones, no eye contact, while staring at a screen. Tech takes the blame while bloated hiring practices and poor management and protection of real estate assets get a free pass. Whatever the spin, today’s corporate office workplace reality requires Olympic-level mental gymnastics to justify this charade.
Moving Beyond Glass Screens Into the Physical World
Over the next decade, AI’s true impact will deepen and extend far beyond generating text, video, or pixels on glass screens. As someone who is in the middle of this all, I can say without hype that it’s so not there yet, there is much work to do and there are tons of teams working on solving a lot of the real issues and limitations. What’s interesting is that applied and physical AI is finally ready to step out of the digital realm to collaborate with us in real time. It’s showing it understands its place in space and time among us, how materials work, how to pull the world’s data sets, patterns and systems together, and most importantly how to interact with these systems and networks. Finally, it is showing the first signs of promise to help us reorganize and reshape the invisible, unglamorous, yet vital foundations of our physical world infrastructure. In a way it is the foundry or core building block of the 21st-century economy and culture.
But let’s be real, right now we have been awash in what I call “innovation theater”: taking multi-step, 20th-century processes, slapping automation onto them, and calling it "AI". It is no wonder so many of these initiatives fail. If we are going to navigate this transition effectively, we need to apply first-principles thinking, an approach I learned across leadership roles in government and at arguably the most innovative tech labs inside the world’s most recognizable search engine.
Ending Innovation Theater: Aiming for 10x Transformation
Innovation theater (incremental innovation with no real visible impact) is obsessed with incremental improvement efficiency. While seeking efficiency is a worthy pursuit in a vacuum, today’s competition guarantees that everyone else is pursuing the same optimizations. The moment an entire industry achieves a 10% efficiency gain, the market re-indexes back to zero; those gains simply become table stakes.
In order to beat out the competition it’s key start with a shift in mindset from 10% efficiency to moonshot principles (big audacious goals) targeting 10x transformation. Instead of asking how to wring 10% more productivity out of a 1,000-person workforce, leaders must reframe the core question: How can 1,000 workers leverage novel applied AI to deliver the impact of a 10,000-person organization with the same budget? What new frontiers can we build, discover, and scale at that level of performance? That is the real game-changer. While the currency right now is learning, corporations have real currency bottom lines so a corporate moonshot process is very different than the ones we worked on in the labs.
To get there, we start by asking a fundamental question: if we were designing this system today from scratch, would we include any of these legacy steps? If the answer is no, only cultural inertia and institutional self-preservation are keeping them alive. Automating a friction-heavy bureaucratic process merely yields an automated mess, executing bad decisions faster and cheaper.
The Five Foundational Areas of Our Modern Infrastructure
I’ve selected some major foundational areas ( I will go into detail on each one in separate upcoming articles) , that I believe with the help of newly organized teams can leverage applied AI to reform our baseline structures. Forward-thinking startups are already building in these spaces, but technology alone is not enough. Governments need to use and apply these modern tools with new policy frameworks to adopt these services, while companies must build viable models that are safe, consistently accurate and reliable to scale them across the planet effectively.
These five core areas represent where I believe our 21st-century operating system needs the most urgent focus, offering the single greatest opportunity of our era to build long-term society wide benefits. Across every domain, the 20th-century operational layer has become the primary Achilles’ heel. Rebuilding these systems will require a series of various skilled digital and physical labor teams leveraging applied AI to help manage and orchestrate the transition.
Utility grids built on 1920s centralized models cannot support modern AI compute, digital finance, or industrial electrification. Clickbait headlines fixate on data centers, but decaying infrastructure leaks far more energy and water daily. The future energy and compute teams will use physical AI rebuilds for this this foundation by pairing compute directly with clean power foundries, balancing micro-grids in real time, and deploying field robotics to manage physical utility networks.
The world’s largest asset class remains trapped in fragmented handoffs that inflate housing costs and stall urban development. While media blames cities and developers, teams on both sides will utilize grounded spatial AI that ingests zoning codes, architectural designs, financial pro-formas, and environmental constraints into an interactive and collaborative platform. City teams can assess various city scenarios over existing areas (increased housing targets, tax uplift, new infrastructure etc) in real time. When done right, it can compress the multi-step feasibility, design and approval process into minutes, allowing municipalities, their community members, architects, and financiers to jointly evaluate real-time trade-offs and clear pre-development in days rather than years.
3. Enterprise AI Token ROI
Corporate management remains trapped in 1920s factory-floor hierarchies, driving real estate bloat, grid strain, and worker burnout. Outrage narratives claim AI software is a failed investment, but mis-management and redundant multi-step workflows are what actually burn capital. Applied AI will need to eliminate this bloat through secure multi-agent harnesses ( think of a donkey-to-racehorse upgrade in performance). By replacing manual data sorting across departments, small AI-native teams within the company can securely prove real token ROI as the market filters out AI software wrappers.
4. Movement of People and Freight
Mobility remains trapped in shift schedules that force peak commutes for mostly digital work, driving bloated oversized vehicles, distracted by smartphones and other behaviors making human operated transport increasingly unsafe and mismatch for cities. Clickbait coverage vilifies autonomous vehicles by demanding absolute perfection, ignoring that the the 1.2 Million fatalities and multiple millions of daily crashes stem from human behavior and outdated street design. Transport managers using applied physical AI will redesign this landscape by decoupling productivity from mandatory travel, reclaim the 50% parcel site footprint wasted on parking for new development, focus on curb side management and pricing while orchestrating robotic assisted operations of multi-modal movement.
5. The Civic-Cultural Temporal Mismatch
Civic, retirement, health and community benefits remain anchored to single-employer worker templates, failing today’s growing gig and fractional portfolio workforce and deepening economic friction across all sectors. Rage-bait blames AI for destroying job security, but the reality is that the market is executing “the great price flip.” The economic value of routine digital sorting work is collapsing to zero while the value of physical human labor and artisan skill trades is soaring. Teams will be using applied AI to rebuild the new civic operating system by serving as an automated broker for portfolio contracts, routing portable benefits directly to individuals, and elevating location-bound physical labor over basic office middleware.
Our New 21st Century World Has Already Started
At the heart of today’s collective anxiety lies a stark disconnect: while digital processing costs crash toward zero, the baseline costs of physical survival (housing, healthcare, energy, food, and education) continue to climb. Real wages stall, corporate layoffs fuel insecurity, and demographers panic over declining birth rates. Yet everyday citizens rightly ask: what do you expect when living in the real world feels economically out of reach?
We faced this institutional lag a century ago. In previous resets, we built machines to serve as our muscles and shoulder physical labor. Today, the true goal of applied AI is not merely to streamline software, but to drive down the physical cost of living so people are finally free to build lives by choice rather than necessity. The 1920s administrative stack served its purpose, but it has reached its operational end-of-life. We can no longer continue living in 1920’a while trying to build a career and community in 2020’s. Decoupling our labor from our identity can feel daunting, but for those transitioning to dynamic portfolio careers, it is deeply liberating.
The time has come to design the operational framework for the 21st century. This structural shift reflects the timeless pattern of how humanity moves from one century to the next. We can view this moment as a narrative of messy transition and disruption, or as a monumental opportunity for systemic renewal and reboot of our collective operating system.
