To paraphrase an old saying goes, the only thing that remains constant in the automotive industry is change. New models are introduced in even the most challenging economic times, though often at the expense of existing models that have overstayed their welcome.

Of note with regard to this year’s list of vehicular obituaries, a surprising number of them are SUVs, following several years of growth concurring with the ongoing demise of passenger cars in many brand’s lineups. Also on the list are several full-electric and plug-in hybrid cars that have fallen out of favor among U.S. car buyers. Arguably the most noteworthy model to be dropped for 2027 is the flagship Lexus LS sedan, a car that’s been around since the brand’s launch in 1996.

There is a bright side for new-vehicle shoppers, however, especially hard-nosed hagglers. Expect to be able to garner deep discounts on departing models as dealers push to winnow down their inventories on what will soon be the equivalent of week-old bread. For example, with trade rules forcing the brand to leave the U.S. market (more on that below), the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 full-electric models are being offered with whopping $25,000 cash rebates and that’s before negotiating the dealer’s discount.

Here’s a look at the cars, SUVs and – yes – even a pickup truck that are being relegated to automotive history this year:

Where compact crossover SUVs have of late been among the most popular rides on the road in the U.S., the slow-selling Acura RDX luxury crossover is being discontinued for 2027. However, a hybrid-powered alternative is reportedly being prepped to eventually replace it in the automaker’s line.

BMW is in the process of winnowing down its expansive luxury fleet, with the curvaceous full-size 8 Series being the most prominent. Introduced for the 2018 model year as an answer to the Porsche Panamera (and already absent from the BMW website), the line consisted of coupe, sedan and four-door-hatchback Gran Coupe models, each of which commanded stratospheric prices.

BMW is cutting the cord on its flagship IX electric crossover SUV in the U.S, this year, though it will continue to be offered in other markets. It debuted for 2021 and is noted by its mammoth kidney-shaped front grille. The automaker is shifting to a new architecture it calls Neue Klass, with the coming iX3 EV crossover being the first model to be built off of the platform.

The low-slung BMW Z4 roadster is leaving the line, being originally released as the Z3 for the 1996 model year; it was upgraded and renamed the Z4 in 2003. It packed as much as 382 horsepower and was a blast to drive, but was little more than a vehicular plaything, with the less expensive Mazda Miata being a better deal for occasional summer weekend excursions.

Buick is winding-down production of its China-built compact Envision crossover SUV most likely because of sluggish sales and tariff concerns. It’s not certain when a successor will be available or what it will be named, though the plan seems to build it in the U.S. alongside the Chevrolet Equinox.

In production since 2019, the handsomely styled CT4 luxury sedan is headed to the auto graveyard in yet another model in a long line of passenger cars that have been canceled over the past decade. It was the last of General Motors’ surviving small gas-powered cars.

The plug-in hybrid version of the popular Pacifica minivan looked good on paper, being able to run for the first 32 miles solely on battery power with a full charge, but was plagued by multiple recalls. The plug-in model is being canceled for 2027, along with the PHEV 4xe versions of the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.

The more affordable alternative to the Chrysler Pacifica is reportedly being discontinued in favor of a new Pacifica LX model that will take over as the price leader. At that, it will reportedly come nicely equipped with power sliding rear doors, heated seats and a heated steering wheel for only a minor price increase over the outgoing model.

Already wiped from the Dodge website is the Alfa Romeo Tonale-based Dodge Hornet due in large part to tariff-fueled sticker prices and slow sales. The Italian-built compact crossover SUV was Dodge’s first plug-in hybrid when it debuted for the 2023 model year, but always seemed to be an odd fit in a showroom alongside the Challenger and Charger muscle cars and the big Durango SUV.

The compact Escape crossover SUV has been an essential part of Ford’s roster since 1991. Nevertheless it’s set to be discontinued for 2027, especially as sales of the similar-size Bronco Sport crossover, and the Bronco off-roader gain in popularity. It’s said to make way for a series of affordable electric cars.

Despite (or perhaps because of) Ford’s success with its car-based Maverick, Hyundai is said to be triggering the demise of its quirky looking unibody pickup truck. This is largely because the Santa Cruz sold only about a sixth of what the Maverick registered last year. Reports suggest the slot in Hyundai’s line will eventually be filled by a bona fide body-on-frame midsize truck.

Jaguar is dropping the lone remaining model – the midsize F-Pace SUV – from what are fast becoming empty showrooms. It’s been around for the past decade with multiple powertrains that included hybrid, diesel and V8 versions. A fresh and far more upscale model line is in the works, beginning with the dynamically styled four-door Type 01 grand tourer and the Type 00 coupe.

The bursting EV bubble with the demise of federal tax breaks last year is taking its toll on the compact full-electric Honda Prologue. Sharing platforms and mechanicals with the far more popular Chevrolet Equinox EV, Honda’s last remaining electric vehicle crosses the Rainbow Bridge after only a two-year run.

Land Rover Discovery Sport

The entry-level Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV is set to be discontinued, with production ending in December after over a decade in production. This move is reportedly part of the luxury model’s planned lifecycle as Land Rover shifts focus to other vehicles in its lineup, including the similar-sized Evoque and Velar models.

The V8-powered and expressively styled Lexus LC coupe and convertible is not returning for 2017 as interest in big and expensive vehicular playthings not to carry a European nameplate is waning. It’s been a niche product at best for Toyota’s luxury division since it premiered for 2018, selling a mere 689 units total during the first six months of 2026.

Sadly, the large and in charge Lexus LS flagship sedan is headed out to pasture for 2027. The LS is literally the car that put Lexus on the map when the brand was launched 40 years ago, but demand for it has dwindled considerably in recent years. It’s going out with a deluxe Heritage Edition model that’s only available in a deep black shade of paint called Ninety Noir, and is priced a stone’s throw away from $100,000.

The brand’s smallest luxury SUV in the U.S. is officially dropped from the automaker’s line after being around since the 2019 model year. The hybrid-powered crossover failed to catch on, even in an era of high gas prices, with its negligible sales being only a sliver of the Toyota-equivalent RAV4’s volume.

You’d think with gas prices sky high and sales of hybrids soaring, the U.S. market would have room for a plug-in version of the Kia Niro, but apparently that’s not part of the plan. Faltering sales are triggering the loss, though the gas and full-electric Niro versions will continue.

This will be the final year in the U.S. for the Volvo subsidiary and its two current models, the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4. The brand is becoming a victim of a Biden administration rule that puts the kibosh on the import and sales of cars with connected-vehicle technology linked to China or Russia starting with the 2027 model year. That’s because Both the Polestar and Volvo brands are partly owned by China’s Geely Holding, which is the parent company of Geely Auto. Despite this, the Volvo brand has been granted the ability to continue selling its models in the U.S.

Nissan Rogue Plug-In Hybrid

The Nissan Rogue PHEV version is another plug-in hybrid that’s biting the proverbial dust for 2027. While Nissan doesn’t break out the numbers separately for the PHEV version, sales for the standard-powered Rogue, which will remain in the line, were up by around 24% over the first half of the year. The PHEV version is said to be canceled to make way for a coming full-electric model.

Tesla Model S and Model X

The pioneering electric-vehicle brand is dropping two models that were early Tesla success stories this year, the large Model S sedan (debuting in 2012) and Model X SUV (around since 2015) Receiving gradual updates rather than a major redesign over the years, their sales pale in comparison with the smaller Model 3 and Model Y. It’s reported the manufacturing space will instead be used to make a line of humanoid robots. Could the polarizing Cybertruck be far behind?

Volkswagen is dropping its first electric vehicle, the compact ID.4 crossover SUV, from its U.S. lineup for 2027, with sliding sales and the need to free up manufacturing sales for higher-volume models at fault. With EV sales in general having taken a dive this year, VW sold fewer than 2,000 ID.4 models in the second quarter of 2026. At that, the automaker is hinting that a new and improved ID.4 may return here for some future model year.

Volvo’s entry-level electric SUVs, the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country will exit the U.S. for 2027 after only two years on the market. Like several other import-branded rides it’s said to be the victim of the unstable tariff situation which is likely compounded by the dip in EV demand stateside.

The midsize Volvo V60 Cross Country went out of production earlier this year as Volvo’s last remaining station wagon in America. Wagons have long been a staple in the automaker’s line and once dominated American families’ driveways, with Volvo keeping them far after other brands had dropped them in favor of minivans and SUVs. The V60 CC dates back to 2010, and with the latest generation being a mild hybrid, it got decent fuel economy in addition to being a smooth and comfortable ride. Unfortunately, it could not withstand the winds of change.
