Sonos , the whole-home music brand, recently launched the Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar and Sonos Ace Ultra wireless headphones as part of its bid to expand its home theater and personal listening portfolio. The two new devices are launching alongside a major platform update: Sonos 27.

These releases follow a few tough years for the company. Sonos launched a radical software overhaul in May 2024; customers were far from happy. Since then, the brand appears to have done everything possible to win back customer loyalty, overhauling its operating system to restore the ecosystem to its status as one of the world’s most popular multi-room audio systems. That effort appears to be paying off with Sonos 27 and these two new products.

The new Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar retains the compact form factor of the original Beam, but the Ultra version unlocks true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos. Meanwhile, the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones feature a redesigned driver, next-generation Adaptive ANC and a direct connection to the Sonos ecosystem as an alternative to Bluetooth.

“Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra are physical manifestations of what we mean when we say ‘sounds like Sonos’ – they combine next-gen innovation, acoustic design, and audio engineering into something only decades of learning in real homes can create, says Tom Conrad, the CEO of Sonos who was brought in to build bridges with customers. “But the real magic happens when they take advantage of the system around them to fit your mood, whether that’s the awe of movie night, or the joy of carrying its soundtrack into your headphones the next morning.”

The Beam Ultra is the latest mid-size soundbar from Sonos and includes nine custom drivers, including two dedicated up-firing drivers for true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos. The bass is warmer and more powerful than the original Beam with enough muscle to work effectively without a separate subwoofer (though Sonos still offers one if you want room-shaking explosions).

Although Sonos devices are designed primarily for app control, the Beam Ultra includes capacitive touch controls for play, pause, skip, and replay. There are also controls for adjusting volume, disabling voice assistant capabilities, and grouping or ungrouping other Sonos devices.

A redesigned center channel on the Beam Ultra has been specially tuned for clearer dialogue, backed by four levels of AI Speech Enhancement via the Sonos app. A Night Sound setting is also available for watching late-night movies without disturbing others in the house.

The Beam Ultra is built as the centerpiece of a modular home theater setup. You can add a subwoofer for deeper bass or a pair of rear surrounds for immersive audio when spaceships whistle past. Additionally, anyone with a pair of Sonos portable speakers can deploy them as rear surrounds for a full cinematic experience.

“A great mix means the listener feels everything without noticing how,” says Chris Jenkins, EVP Digital Studios, Universal Music Group. “That’s exactly what Beam Ultra delivers - sound that pulls you into the scene instead of reminding you you’re listening to a speaker.”

The Beam Ultra’s low-profile form factor allows it to sit comfortably in front of a TV without blocking the infrared remote receiver. It embraces simplicity with an HDMI eARC input for quick setup, omitting optical, analog, and Ethernet ports. However, a USB-C port is included, which works with the Sonos Combo Adapter for connecting analog sources or streaming from a computer over USB.

While the Beam Ultra includes built-in microphones, it currently only supports Sonos Voice Control. Sonos states that Alexa support is on the way. For privacy-conscious users, a hardware toggle switch completely disables the microphones.

Other features include Bluetooth connectivity for non-Sonos devices and support for Apple AirPlay 2. Trueplay room tuning is built-in, automatically adjusting the Beam Ultra’s EQ to suit the acoustics of your space (compatible with both iOS and Android). Manual bass and treble controls are also available in the app for fine-tuning.

Sonos Ace Ultra Headphones

Launching alongside the soundbar are the new Sonos Ace Ultra over-ear headphones. Built around custom-designed 40mm drivers, they feature an updated Adaptive ANC system powered by 10 microphones. The ANC dynamically adjusts noise control to account for seal changes caused by head movements, glasses or hair.

Beyond music and podcasts, the Ace Ultra is optimized for voice calls. A sidetone feature helps your voice sound natural while calling, even with ANC engaged. Background noise suppression and 32kHz high-resolution calling ensure clear audio on both ends.

The headphones also feature Adaptive EQ, which adjusts sound output in real time to counteract acoustic leaks from glasses or hair. For custom tuning, the Sonos app offers 3-band and 8-band EQ adjustments, alongside a toggle for Loudness.

Sonos engineered the Ace Ultra for long-listening comfort, delivering clamping pressure and fit comparable to the Bose QuietComfort Ultra, the current benchmark in the market. The battery lasts up to 35 hours on a single charge with ANC enabled.

Physical controls include a multi-function Control Key on the right ear cup: slide to adjust volume, or press to play, pause, skip, or swap audio with the nearest Sonos speaker. The swap feature makes transitioning movie audio from the soundbar to headphones effortless late at night.

The headphones use TrueCinema technology when pulling TV audio from the soundbar providing much better quality movie sound when listening privately. A dedicated Noise Control button toggles between ANC and Aware mode or triggers a voice assistant using a long press.

Power And Bluetooth Button

The left ear cup houses the power and Bluetooth pairing button. A long press pairs additional devices, while a double-tap switches active Bluetooth sources—allowing you to listen to audio on a laptop and quickly switch to take a call on your phone. A status LED at the bottom indicates power and connectivity states.

The Ace Ultra is the first pair of headphones built on Headphone Engine 2, a new hardware architecture that integrates the headphones directly into the broader Sonos system. The original Ace headphones lacked true direct ecosystem integration at launch, whereas Headphone Engine 2 on the Ace Ultra solves this issue natively.

Available in Early Access, a single button press handshakes audio directly from your Sonos system to your headphones and back again with no phone required. For wired listening, the Ace Ultra supports passive playback via an included 3.5mm auxiliary cable.

Both devices offer new entry points into the updated Sonos 27 ecosystem. Like all Sonos products, they were fine-tuned with feedback from the Sonos Soundboard with an advisory panel of music and film leaders to ensure fidelity to the artist’s original intent.

The refreshed Sonos ecosystem uses an open platform designed to unify all your listening sources. Every speaker functions independently or as part of a multi-room setup, with automatic room-tuning for every space.

The Sonos Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra will be available for pre-order starting September 1, 2026, from sonos.com and select retail partners. The Sonos Beam Ultra costs $699 / £699 / €699 while the Sonos Ace Ultra is priced at $449 / £399 / €449. Shipments should begin on September 29, 2026.
