This is the week when everything appears to happen in sequence, but none of it is connected. A solar eclipse, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, Venus becoming a crescent, and some beautiful conjunctions combine to create one of the most significant seven-day periods for skywatching in 2026 . Here’s everything you need to know and the sky from Aug. 10-16, 2026.
Tuesday, Aug. 11 A razor-thin 2.4%-lit waning crescent moon appears briefly before sunrise, marking the final days before its new phase. It will be close to Mercury.
Wednesday, Aug. 12 A total solar eclipse occurs today, with totality visible only from within a narrow 180 miles-wide path of totality — the moon’s dark central shadow — that moves through eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. Partial phases will be visible across much of the Northern Hemisphere, including most of Europe, Canada, and Northeast states in the U.S.
Thursday, Aug. 13 The Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight, with rates of up to 100 meteors per hour under dark skies. The best time to look will be between midnight and 4:00 a.m. local time across the Northern Hemisphere.
Saturday, Aug. 15 A 13%-lit waxing crescent moon will appear beneath Venus as the planet reaches its greatest elongation east, its farthest apparent point from the sun in our sky. Look to the west after sunset.
Sunday, Aug. 16 A 21%-lit waxing crescent moon will appear close to bright star Spica, in the constellation Virgo. Look to the west after sunset.
THE PERSEIDS IN PERFECT CONDITIONS
The Perseids are often described as the most reliable meteor shower of the year, but in 2026 they arrive under near-ideal conditions — clear skies allowing. With the moon absent from the night sky, even faint meteors become visible, dramatically increasing the number you can see. These meteors are debris from comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle, entering Earth’s atmosphere at around 37 miles per second (59 kilometers per second), according to the American Meteor Society . At that speed, even tiny particles produce bright streaks, often leaving glowing trails that persist for several seconds.
The peak occurs overnight on August 12-13, but the key is persistence, not timing. Begin watching late in the evening on Aug. 12, facing northeast, have a short rest, and return about 01:00 a.m. local time for a longer session. As the radiant in Perseus climbs to its highest around 2:00 a.m., meteor rates will increase. The best way to see “shooting stars” is to lie back, take in as much sky as possible and allow your night vision to develop. The longer you stay, the more the meteors will come to you.
WHAT A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE REALLY SHOWS
On Aug. 12, the moon will pass directly between Earth and the sun, casting a narrow shadow across the planet. Within that path, observers will experience totality — the complete covering of the sun’s disk. It’s a magical few minutes, during which the solar corona — a vast, structured halo of plasma extending millions of kilometers into space — becomes visible. Headline destinations will be Greenland’s Scoresby Sund — where expedition cruise ships full of eclipse chasers are bound for — western Iceland, including the capital Reykjavik, and northern Spain, where totality will occur low in the sky near sunset.
SEEING A PARTIAL ECLIPSE IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE
Outside the path of totality, a partial eclipse will be visible. Although the total solar eclipse will be total only from Greenland, Iceland and Spain, Europe and North America will still get a partial eclipse. The best views from North America will be in eastern Canada and the northeastern U.S. St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador will see 53% of the sun covered, Halifax 31%, Saint John 28%, Québec City 24%, Boston 16% and New York 10%. Eclipse glasses or front-mounted solar filters will be essential at all times. From the U.K. and Europe, the sun will be deeply partially eclipsed close to sunset and, in some locations, will set while still deeply eclipsed. Corsica will see the sun set while it’s 96% eclipsed, with Venice, Italy, at 91% and Warsaw, Poland, at 83%.
VENUS BEGINS ITS BRIGHTEST PHASE
Amid the drama of meteors and eclipses, a longer story is unfolding quietly in the west after sunset. On August 12, Venus appears half-lit, marking the transition into its crescent phase. From this point onward, it begins to change rapidly. As Venus moves closer to Earth in its orbit, its apparent size increases, even as the illuminated portion shrinks. The result is a steady increase in brightness. By August 15, Venus reaches greatest elongation east — its widest apparent separation from the sun. This makes it easier to observe, lingering longer in the evening sky. Over the following weeks, it will become an unmistakable presence, growing brighter each night until it reaches peak brilliance on Sept. 18. Seeing Venus as a crescent in a pair of binoculars or a small telescope is a treat.
Constellation Of The Week: Perseus
Rising in the northeast after dark, Perseus is not the easiest constellation to make sense of, but its rich star fields are hard to miss. This week, it becomes one of the most important constellations of all as the radiant of the Perseid meteor shower, the point from which meteors appear to originate. The key is not to look directly at Perseus, but to use it as a reference. Meteors streak across the sky in all directions, but if you trace their paths backward, they converge here. That’s because Earth is moving through a stream of debris, and Perseus marks the direction of travel.
