Konami is dropping Silent Hill: Townfall soon with 48-hour early access. The next iteration of the popular survival horror franchise is only available on two platforms, but the price point is lower than most AAA titles and it’ll be available well before Halloween. Launch times vary by platform. The U.S. PlayStation Store lists the Standard Edition at 04:00 UTC on September 24, which is midnight ET and 9 p.m. PT the night before. Steam displays September 23, and there is no confirmed PC unlock schedule, so those conversions apply to PlayStation only.

Konami is taking a gamble by switching to first-person gameplay and by adding a distinctive look with CRTV, but they’re doing it at a lower price point, which could turn out to be a worthwhile gamble.

One big question about the visuals and gameplay marriage will center around CRTV. Does it make the game scarier or will it numb the impact of the jump scares? Depending on what you’re looking for, it could make or break the experience.

Scotland is an interesting choice, but it provides backdrops and imagery that could play well with the spooky vibes associated with Silent Hill. Think heavy fog, historic architecture and greenery.

Likewise, there’s something to be said for first-person experiences in horror titles, but that’s not the foundation Silent Hill was built on. Will players interact with the game more as a shooter and is that the desired engagement?

This is probably the largest title Screen Burn has handled, but their previous work seemingly aligns with Silent Hill’s motif. That said, Townfall will be a major proving ground.
