DIY smart home enthusiast favorite Shelly has announced one of the most interesting Matter developments of IFA 2026, with a free update that turns its Wall Display into both a Matter Controller… and also a bunch of Matter devices.

What that means is that compatible Shelly Wall Displays will be able to add and control Matter devices from other manufacturers directly on the touchscreen, while also making their own entities available to whatever smart home ecosystem you use.

The double-bubble Matter action means your lights, blinds, thermostats, fans, plugs, sensors and more can be added directly to the Wall Display and appear alongside Shelly devices on its home screen.

Those third-party devices can also be incorporated into Shelly scenes, automations and scripts, with automation running locally on the panel.

The interoperability also works in the opposite way.

Shelly’s Wall Displays pack in things like relays, heating controls, smart buttons and dimmers, and these can become Matter devices themselves and be exposed to the likes of Apple Home, Alexa, Home Assistant, SmartThings and pretty much any other smart home platform you can think of.

Aqara already offers two-way Matter support, allowing third-party Matter devices into their ecosystems while bridging their Zigbee devices out to Apple Home, Alexa and other platforms.

Shelly’s move is slightly different, however, with the Wall Display itself becoming both a Matter controller and multiple Matter devices, allowing its own built-in relays, dimmer and thermostat controls to be exposed to other ecosystems.

The Matter update lands as a free firmware update on the Wall Display X1i, X2i, XL, U1, S1, S2 and XT.

Shelly tells us that older Wall Display models will also gain some Matter control functionality when paired with a newer compatible display.

Thread-based Matter devices will still require a Thread Border Router, so it’s not a complete Matter Controller slam-dunk but it’s still pretty cool nonetheless.

Away from Matter, Shelly has also refreshed its BLU TRV smart radiator thermostat with a quieter motor and battery life of up to two years.

The new model supports Bluetooth and Zigbee and is designed for more flexible room-by-room heating control.

There are also two new door and window sensors on show at IFA 2026.

The BLU Door Window Mini ZB is designed for narrow frames and tight spaces, while the IP55-rated BLU Door Window Outdoor ZB is built for garden gates, sheds and other outdoor areas.

Shelly is also getting in the security cam game with the new Shelly Camera: a compact indoor 1080p camera with dual-band Wi-Fi, local microSD storage and two-way audio.

It’s hardly groundbreaking but at less than $50, it’s a relatively affordable addition to the Shelly ecosystem, and - always good news - it doesn’t require a subscription (aside from those pesky AI detection features).

Finally, Shelly has expanded its integration with Brilliant NextGen, with Shelly sensors now available inside the Brilliant platform and relay support scheduled to arrive later this month.

Brilliant NextGen recently made its first major play since a major relaunch (after the original company effectively folded in 2024) with a subscription service that shifts the focus from simply controlling devices to managing an entire smart home experience.
