Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless Earbuds With User-Replaceable Batteries
Sonova AG , the Swiss hearing-aid producer behind Sennheiser’s consumer division, has unveiled the fifth generation of Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds. The reimagined earbuds blend innovation with some of the technology and design principles used in the recently released Momentum 5 Wireless headphones . The goal was to offer flagship headphone performance in a compact wireless earbud design.
Frank Foppe, product manager, explains, “We aimed to bring the larger-than-life sound and connected technology of the Momentum series into an incredibly compact format. From its exquisite audio reproduction to the advanced hardware powering it, the Momentum True Wireless 5 represents our most sophisticated integration of audio technology in an earbud.”
The all-new Momentum 5 True Wireless earbuds have been designed for enhanced comfort. They aim to offer improved connectivity and stability with greater portability. Furthermore, the batteries can now be easily replaced by the user with nothing more complicated than a small screwdriver.
I can’t recall seeing wireless earbuds with user-replaceable batteries before. However, it’s setting a trend and will become more common as large trading blocs like the EU legislate for more sustainable and consumer-friendly electronics.
The ability to easily swap out batteries in such a tiny pair of earbuds is a testament to the advanced engineering and design skills that Sonova, a hearing aid company, is known for. Most wireless earbuds, on the other hand, follow the Apple AirPod model, where the batteries are fixed in place with glue and can’t be replaced.
So, you are essentially renting your earbuds, not owning them. Every couple of years, you need to replace them with new ones that have fresh batteries. This can be wasteful and harmful to the environment, so it is great that the electronics industry is embracing more sustainable solutions. This means earbuds should last much longer than just a couple of years.
Sennheiser’s new Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds have also been optimized for Dolby Atmos and now include head-tracking that unlocks immersive entertainment no matter how much you move your head. Other improvements to the design include clearer voice calls and improved Active Noise Cancellation featuring a voice accelerometer as well as an expanded mic array that has AI speech enhancement.
Support for the latest Bluetooth 6.0 in the Momentum True Wireless 5 promises faster and more stable wireless connectivity. There’s also support for Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive audio codec, which provides stable wireless freedom with a hi-res audio pathway up to 24-bit and 96kHz, including aptX Lossless for bit-perfect transmission on supported audio sources.
At the heart of these new earbuds is the same DSP that powers Sennheiser’s recently released fifth-generation Momentum headphones. The technology is designed to allow listeners to choose their preferred wearing style.
It all starts with the brand’s signature 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducers, which are designed to balance detail with full-bodied, bass-driven tuning. The drivers were developed at Sennheiser’s production facility in Tullamore, Ireland, where they are also manufactured and tested for precision, clarity and dynamics.
When it comes to cutting down on unwanted noise, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 have adaptive hybrid active noise cancellation and an automatic anti-wind mode. A redesigned ear tip works with a dedicated four-microphone array to maximize the noise-cancelling performance.
Sennheiser also says the new earbuds have a more natural-sounding, real-time transparency mode. For high-quality voice capture, the earbuds can use all eight of its system sensors, combining six microphones and two bone-conducing voice accelerometers with an AI speech-extraction algorithm that isolates the user’s voice when making calls in noisy environments.
Inheriting the spatial audio prowess of the over-ear model, the Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds are fully optimized for Dolby Atmos with interactive head-tracking capability that enables the projection of an immersive, theater-like spatial audio field that the listener can take anywhere.
Designed for all-day listening, the earbuds can play continuously for up to 12 hours on a single charge. There are another two full battery top-ups held in the charging case, bringing total playing time to 40 hours before a full recharge is needed. The charging case can be topped up using a USB-C cable or a wireless charging mat. There’s also a quick-charge capability that can extend listening time by up to an hour with an 8-minute burst charge.
“Balancing compact size, our signature high-fidelity acoustics, and a replaceable battery is a major breakthrough,” says Lilika Beck, president of Sennheiser Consumer Hearing. “With Momentum True Wireless 5, we are proving that cutting-edge performance does not have to sacrifice longevity.”
To achieve the “barely there” fit of the Momentum True Wireless 5, the earbud housing has a new aerodynamic silhouette that was sculpted using data derived from thousands of unique ear models. The fin-less shape of the earbuds was rated more comfortable than the prior generation by 73% of testers.
The earbuds are rated IP54 for dust, sweat and splash resistance. A micro-perforated acoustic mic plate mitigates wind turbulence, protecting both voice capture and ANC stability in windy conditions. The earbuds’ charging case has also been re-engineered and now has a narrower, pocket-friendly shape as well as a low-friction finish that makes it easier to slip in and out of a pocket.
Finally, the new earbuds can be controlled and customized using Sennheiser’s Smart Control Plus smartphone app. There is a new 8-band EQ tool plus an assortment of other features like controls that can be customized to suit the user’s preferences.
