Long before attaining global superstardom, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were two young children navigating the demanding landscape of Hollywood together. Their journey began on Barney & Friends before they advanced to anchoring the Disney Channel, filming quirky YouTube vlogs, attending red carpet premieres, and dating the Jonas Brothers.

The pair remained practically inseparable for years, even headlining the cherished 2009 Disney Channel original movie Princess Protection Program. However, as maturity set in, personal friction and mounting distance created a rift, leaving devoted supporters wondering if the iconic duo would ever share a stage or screen again.

Now, more than twenty years after their initial meeting, Gomez and Lovato are joining forces for a groundbreaking Rare Beauty partnership that would have seemed nearly impossible just a few short years ago.

On Wednesday, October 28, Gomez’s cosmetics enterprise debuted the Delena Soft Pinch Blush Bundle. This exclusive kit pairs two prominent shades of the brand's signature liquid blush: Virtue, Lovato’s preferred beige-peach tone, alongside Hope, Gomez’s favorite nude-mauve option. Additionally, the collection includes a complementary Soft Pinch Blush Brush.

“Royal responsibilities include making each other blush,” Rare Beauty declared via an Instagram announcement, pairing the caption with promotional imagery that playfully recreates their classic poses from Princess Protection Program.

During a candid feature interview with ELLE, Lovato discussed maturing alongside Gomez and navigating the various eras of their enduring bond.

“We’ve been friends since we were 7 years old when we met on Barney. There have been different chapters throughout our lives, and naturally, friends are in each other’s lives heavily at times, and then sometimes you’re not in constant communication,” Lovato shared with the publication.

Lovato noted that Gomez remains someone she has continually cherished, expressing deep appreciation for their ability to blend professional collaboration with genuine personal reconnection. She also reminisced about reviewing their archival YouTube vlogs from their formative Disney years.

I went on YouTube recently and looked at our vlogs together. I think that was something that really captured our innocence at the time and our drive to have a presence in front of people while still staying true to ourselves. It was really cute going down memory lane, and I showed my husband. I couldn’t stick around for the whole video because I felt so cringe. But they were iconic. I was like, “Okay, you can watch 10 seconds of this.” I don’t know what I’m doing [in them], but it was really funny and really cute.

In tandem with the launch, Rare Beauty released promotional footage showing Gomez and Lovato recreating their vintage bedroom vlogs, surrounded by retro posters from their adolescent television days.

This beauty collaboration follows a public reconciliation six months prior, when Gomez attended the opening night of Lovato’s It’s Not That Deep Tour in Orlando, Florida, on April 13.

Gomez was observed cheering on her longtime peer from the crowd before heading backstage to reunite, capturing photographs that quickly swept across social media. The Only Murders in the Building lead also celebrated Lovato’s set via Instagram Stories. According to ELLE, their subsequent business venture materialized organically following this public reunion.

A Look Back At Selena Gomez And Demi Lovato’s Complicated Friendship

Although their connection originated in childhood, the relationship between Gomez and Lovato experienced notable turbulence. In a 2014 profile with Seventeen, Gomez disclosed that the two drifted apart while Lovato faced severe personal challenges.

“I’ve known her since we were seven—and we did fall apart for a while,” Gomez recounted, noting that she lacked the maturity at the time to comprehend the difficulties her friend was enduring.

Reflecting on the situation, Gomez acknowledged that she failed to handle the circumstances appropriately.

“I processed it saying, ‘OK, I don’t understand what she’s going through so I’m just going to do this.’ And I don’t think it was fair, and I’m so happy that I have her back in my life now,” Gomez stated.

Despite periodic estrangement, the performers continually offered public encouragement. In September 2017, Lovato commended Gomez following her publicized kidney transplant, informing People, “I think that she is a very strong woman. I’m very happy and proud of her.”

The subsequent month, Gomez reciprocated by promoting Lovato’s autobiographical documentary, Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, describing the project as “beautiful” via an Instagram comment.

By 2020, however, their dynamic shifted once more. During a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, Lovato confirmed that they were no longer in contact, though lingering affection remained.

“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her… I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best,” Lovato told the magazine.

Their rapport warmed considerably in recent years. During a September 2025 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Lovato congratulated Gomez regarding her collaborative musical project with Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First, alongside celebrating the couple's engagement.

Selena Gomez And Demi Lovato’s Shared Commitment To Mental Health

Both artists have evolved profoundly since their network television beginnings, expanding their influence far beyond the entertainment industry. Each star has emerged as a prominent mental health advocate, utilizing their massive platforms to foster awareness and dismantle lingering stigmas.

Gomez has woven mental health advocacy directly into the core foundation of Rare Beauty, with the enterprise pledging one percent of all annual proceeds to the Rare Impact Fund, an organization dedicated to broadening youth access to psychological support services.

Similarly, Lovato has spent years speaking transparently regarding personal recovery and emotional well-being. In her ELLE interview, the vocalist explained her motivation for addressing these struggles early in her professional journey, aiming to provide the exact guidance she lacked during her youth.

There’s so much stigma and taboo in talking about mental health and mental illnesses. I wanted to be open about what I was dealing with at a young age because I didn’t have anybody my age that I could look up to in the public eye. People would usually come out and talk about it after their careers had peaked. I didn’t have anyone as a role model at a young age to be like, “I’m struggling, and it’s okay, and I’ll be okay.” I wanted to be that for other people. I decided to be open with my journey and talk about a plethora of things that I’ve dealt with, whether it be addiction, eating disorders, or bipolar disorder.

Lovato additionally lauded Gomez for sharing personal challenges and championing psychological wellness globally.

“With everything that she’s dealt with, she’s such an advocate for mental health, and I think that’s so incredible,” Lovato observed, summarizing her current outlook by adding, “I’m in a great place, and I feel good. I’m sober, and all the good things.”

The Delena Soft Pinch Blush Bundle is currently available for purchase exclusively through the Rare Beauty platform.
