As voters across the nation head to the polls tomorrow, one unique polling location in San Diego, California, is offering a heavy dose of canine comfort to combat election-day anxiety.

Beginning at 7 a.m. at Hilltop Community Park, the nonprofit Helen Woodward Animal Center will launch its "Paws at the Polls" initiative. According to Jessica Gercke, the organization's public relations and communications director, citizens are invited to cuddle adoptable puppies regardless of their preferred "pawty."

“Across the country, it seems as though parties are very tense and there’s a lot of tension politically. And one of the things that we’ve always said at Helen Woodward Animal Center is that we are absolutely non-political. Whoever is in love with animals and makes it their mission to save lives of orphan pets, we’re 100% with you,” Gercke explained. “So in that way, we felt like there’s a nice way to provide joy and comfort and take some of the tension out of voting day by bringing pups out and reminding everybody of the simple pleasures in life.”

Among the primary highlights of the activation will be a dedicated puppy kissing booth, an attraction that proved immensely popular during the election cycle two years ago.

“Two years ago when we did it, we put up a little puppy kissing booth and it was such a joyous thing,” she noted. “Everybody coming over, nobody knew who anybody was voting for, but everybody was bonding over the puppies. And so we’re going to do that again because we just really like being able to provide that.”

Puppies Provide Election Day Stress Relief

Providing emotional support through animals is a regular undertaking for the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which routinely brings puppy therapy to hospital patients, military veterans, and first responders. Integrating this mission into Election Day is a natural extension of their community work, Gercke emphasized.

“The mission at Helen Woodward is ‘People helping animals, animals helping people,’” she stated. “And we do feel that animals, it’s been shown that they lower blood pressure, that they make people smile, that they focus people, that they get them just focused on the moment, kind of a Zen moment when the animals are around. So we think that that’s a real positive for people that are heading in with maybe a bit of tension on their shoulders as they head into vote.”

Whether a voter identifies as a “Demo-CAT,” “Re-PUP-lican,” or an “Inde-PET-dent,” anyone who falls head over heels for a furry companion can journey down the tongue-in-cheek "campaign trail" to the center's main facility in Rancho Santa Fe to submit an adoption application.

Gercke also addressed common misperceptions regarding animal shelters, noting that some individuals mistakenly believe facilities only house older or ailing animals.

“Helen Woodward has become known for taking all pregnant moms and puppies,” she said. “We have an incredible foster base. So we love to bring our puppies out and remind everybody that you can find the cutest, most healthy, adorable puppy at your local shelter.”

Ultimately, Gercke believes that a shared affection for animals serves as a powerful unifying force that transcends partisan boundaries.

“We do these lunches with people that support the Center and any conversation about politics goes away when you’re talking about animals,” she reflected. “You know that somebody has a heart similar to yours when they’re loving on a puppy the same way you are. I think it’s a reminder that whatever our political leanings are, at the end of the day, we can all unite over the love that we have in our hearts for these little guys.”

Naturally, the overarching hope is that every participating puppy secures a permanent home while inspiring animal lovers nationwide to contemplate pet adoption.

“No matter what side of politics you lean on, please remember that the one thing we can really do together is save the lives of these orphan pets,” she urged. “Please go out and adopt.”
