Roborock has branched out from robot vacuums and robot lawnmowers to produce its first swimming pool cleaning robot, the Roborock RockAqua P1.

The concept is familiar, the execution a little different to its indoors peers. A Roborock RockAqua P1 uses a tread and rubbery rollers to clean pool surfaces and pool water and, with the aid of suction power, can climb up pool walls too in order to clean up at the water line.

In action, the RockAqua P1 comes across like a little moon rover, quietly and diligently going about its business without the rock and wobble of a robot vacuum trundling over carpet.

It can pass through 6,800 gallons of water per hour— acting as both surface suction and to clean the pool water — and uses a debris bucket with a two layer filtration system to de-gunk the pool. There are 180 micro meter and 70 micro meter filter layers.

How The Roborock RockAqua P1 Works

Like other mini service robots of this kind the Roborock RockAqua P1 uses a front-mounted camera system to navigate, dubbed ClearVision. This helps it move around obstacles and make its way around non-rectangular pool shapes more successfully. It’s “designed to adapt to complex pools” according to Roborock.

Its camera and sensory system is perhaps a little simpler than that of high-end models in the mature robot vacuum space, though, with just a single camera sensor up front.

There is additional intelligence going on here, though. Its suction level will adjust when obstacles deemed to be non-suck-up-able are nearby, for example. And it will effectively construct a map of the pool to ensure it cleans its whole area.

The way a Roborock RockAqua P1 moves about, with suction a key factor, means it needs some depth of water to operate properly, but that limit is just 15cm.

Its battery lasts for 3.5 hours, while charging also takes around 3.5 hours. There’s no charging station for this one, suggesting you will have to fish the little guy out of the pool once it has finished its job or run out of charge.

The company has also announced new models in its more conventional cleaning lines, topped off with the Saros 20 Neo vacuum and mop. Its key skills include being able to fit under surfaces as long as it has 7.95cm clearance and an ability to mount threshold borders of up to 8.8cm.

Roborock is yet to announce pricing for the Roborock RockAqua P1, and there is no confirmation of a U.S. release yet. As a brand new line, it’s tricky to even guess a ballpark figure — but its high-end existing Roborock Saros 20 vacuum retails for $1,599.99.
