Resident Evil is looking to surpass box office expectations this weekend, with the 90-minute Zach Cregger video game adaptation riding high on good reviews and already-viral word of mouth. Now, it has set yet another Rotten Tomatoes record.

The record may not be the most surprising one, but Resident Evil now has the franchise’s highest Rotten Tomatoes audience score, matching its critic record. And also like the critic score, it is not close. Right now, Resident Evil has a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is 24% higher than the next-closest film, the original Resident Evil , which most fans have held up as one of the better video game adaptations out there over the years, though standards were a bit lower when that was the case. Here’s the list:

  • Resident Evil (2026) - 91% audience score
  • Resident Evil (2002) – 67% audience score
  • Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) – 65% audience score
  • Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) – 60% audience score
  • Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) – 58% audience score
  • Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) – 51% audience score
  • Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) – 48% audience score
  • Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) – 47% audience score

So, unlike the critic scores where every movie besides this weekend’s Resident Evil was below a 40%, there are three fresh scores in here, and nothing below 47%. You may see from the sheer number of these films that the six-film Milla Jovovich era was very popular, and these films did make enough money for the franchise to continue until a five-year break, when the 2021 reboot happened. Now, another five years, and we get the Zach Cregger/Austin Abrams feature.

While Resident Evil is the highest-scored video game movie of all time by critics, that is not true with audience scores, as there are some higher. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has a 95%, Sonic 1 has a 93% and Sonic 2 has a 91%. People love those. The same goes for The Super Mario Bros. Movie , which has a 95%. Even Gran Turismo has a 91%. Still, Resident Evil is certainly one of the highest, especially if we’re counting live-action films (and not those featuring, say, a CGI blue hedgehog).

The internet may have suggested that audience scores would be lower, as many Resident Evil fans deemed it not a “proper” Resident Evil adaptation before its release. But either they were convinced after watching or it’s a smaller group than social media chatter indicated.

Resident Evil also has the benefit of looking like a normal horror movie rather than a guns-blazing action variant like the Jovovich ones. Horror is often big business, especially given what we’ve seen this year from Obsession to Backrooms , and Resident Evil is going to do very well after a strong start in its opening weekend.
