Australian AV brand RØDE has released a free firmware update for its RØDECaster Video series. This update is no mere maintenance release: it introduces a fundamental architecture overhaul that now enables 4K capture, isolated track recording and high-resolution NDI streaming across all RØDE’s video hardware range. The omission of 4K support on the original release attracted some criticism, so RØDE has addressed that shortcoming.

The free update applies to the flagship RØDECaster Video, the Video S and the rack-mountable Video Core. By reprioritizing the hardware’s internal octa-core processing, the firmware update introduces two high-throughput operating modes that turn the consoles from live production switchers into dedicated multi-camera capture and distribution hubs.

The headline addition is 4K Capture Mode, where the consoles bypass heavy live-switching graphics, keying, and media playback to focus processing power on raw video throughput. Under the new mode, the console accepts multiple 4K (3,840 × 2,160 at 30fps) HDMI camera inputs, with four feeds on the standard RØDECaster Video and three feeds on the Video S and Video Core.

Each camera input can be streamed independently over a local network as individual NDI feeds compatible with software like OBS, vMix, and Ecamm Live. The feeds can also be recorded directly to an external USB-C SSD as isolated 4K tracks in H.264 or H.265 for post-production editing and grading.

For content creators who choose high frame rates over raw resolution, there is a parallel Full HD Capture Mode that maintains the same multi-feed NDI streaming and ISO recording architecture, but at a resolution of 1080p at 60fps. The standard live-switching mode with full keying, transitions and scene building in Full HD remains intact as the default option.

Firmware 1.4 also rolls out RØDECaster Sync across RØDE’s entire video lineup. Previously, this was a feature exclusive to the Video Core. Sync enables creators to link a RØDECaster Video unit directly to a RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo audio console with a single USB-C cable.

Once connected, the two units can operate as a unified 9-channel audio and video studio. Physical faders, touchscreens and SMART pads on the audio console can be used to trigger video switches, scene transitions and media overlays. All audio and video tracks record synchronously to a single storage drive connected to the video unit.

Post-Production And App Updates

Additional post-production updates include the addition of OpenTimelineIO (OTIO) export, which lets users rebuild multi-camera switching sessions directly inside Adobe Premiere Pro. This joins the DaVinci Resolve EDL export introduced in version 1.3. The firmware also adds support for receiving digital audio directly from USB webcams and introduces customizable keyboard shortcuts for the desktop RØDECaster App.

The RØDECaster Video Firmware 1.4 is available immediately as a free download via the RØDECaster Central desktop application or directly through network-connected hardware.
