PlayStation State Of Play Hijacked By ‘Destiny 3,’ Physical Disc Demands
Sony aired a lengthy PlayStation S tate of Play on Thursday , showing off a number of upcoming games, previously announced and otherwise. While there were hits and misses, those chatting about the event were having none of it for the entire duration of the show. There are two demands in particular that were spammed in chat for the whole showcase:
This is in reference to Sony’s announcement that they will not make any new physical discs starting in 2028, which has created the most pushback the brand has ever seen about a decision it has made. While physical discs have been a shrinking part of sales in the market, there are still significant chunks of players that want to physically own their games.
Eliminating discs does nothing but benefit Sony while taking away choice from players and making game preservation much more difficult. The only thing that’s changing is that Sony is getting more money by eliminating retailer cuts and having everything sold on its storefronts. This, of course, will not come with a reduction in game prices, which have increased to $70 for mainstream games in recent years and are now starting to push to $80 as Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches.
Sony has essentially said nothing in response to player outcry about this since the change was announced on July 1, two months ago. The idea is that they were hoping it would all blow over. It has not, not even a little bit.
This is the second, possibly even more frequently spammed demand in the chat, a request for a sequel to Destiny 2.
It’s not just that players want a new sequel the way some may want a God of War 3 or The Last of Us 3 . Rather, this is in the wake of a rather stunning situation where Sony ended service on Bungie’s Destiny 2, its only first-party live-service game with a sizable playerbase, reportedly due to cost issues.
The 12-year-old franchise may have been getting long in the tooth, but ending service completely and then promptly laying off the half of Bungie that worked on it is an entirely different level of abandonment. The idea is that players may have been able to stomach Destiny 2 ending if Destiny 3 was at least announced as the next step for the franchise. It was not, nor has any other Destiny project been greenlit, killing the entire IP in every way except a floundering NetEase mobile game, Destiny Rising.
Both the disc-wanters and Destiny 3 -demanders are not letting up, despite these decisions being made months ago. No, chat spam is not exactly something you would imagine would change hearts and minds at a company, but it is emblematic of very real playerbase anger that Sony would be wise to address at some point here.
