The Philadelphia Phillies have plenty of offseason questions to answer after another disappointing postseason, with several familiar faces potentially headed elsewhere.

While the Phillies are locked into several large, immovable contracts, including their deals for Trea Turner, Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, the team could be preparing to move on from a handful of significant pending free agents.

“Seven players from the Phillies’ 2026 roster are set to become free agents: Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez, Adolis Garcia, Edmundo Sosa, Jose Alvarado, Brooks Raley and Tim Mayza,” Cole Weintraub noted for NBC Sports Philadelphia . “How aggressively Philadelphia approaches replacing or retaining them comes with another layer of uncertainty.”

Among that list of pending free agents, one standout figure is Sosa, who has spent the majority of his career with the Phillies. Sosa offered some key versatility and a strong ending to his season with the Phillies, giving the team a tough choice in potential contract negotiations.

Philadelphia Phillies’ Fan Favorite Sends Contract Message After Team Exit

Immediately after the team was eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in another disappointing playoff series, Sosa offered a parting message about his time with the Phillies.

“I’ve been here for the past five years, and like I’ve always said, these have been the best five years of my career,” Sosa said through an interpreter, according to On Pattison’s Tim Kelly . “I’m also thankful for everyone and the organization and the support that they’ve shown me and obviously for the team to giving me the opportunity to continue being an MLB player. I’m just living my dream, as I always said.”

Sosa joined Philadelphia in a 2022 trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and developed into one of the club’s most useful utility players. His ability to move around the infield and outfield gave the Phillies a key solution for managing injuries, matchups and lineup changes.

His 2026 season was uneven statistically, but Sosa finished the year with nine home runs and 44 RBI while playing multiple positions. He appeared at second base, shortstop, third base and left field during the season.

More importantly, Sosa remained available when Philadelphia needed him.

“Sosa played through discomfort late in the season and remained available wherever the Phillies needed him,” Weintraub added. “He has been with the organization since the 2022 trade deadline, becoming a fan favorite while filling just about every role imaginable across the infield and outfield. His versatility and right-handed bat could make him attractive to several teams looking for more than a traditional bench player.”

Philadelphia Phillies Face Difficult Edmundo Sosa Decision After Free Agent Update

Sosa does not sound like he is eager to close the door on the Phillies. Instead, his post-exit comments reflected just how meaningful his time with the organization has been while acknowledging the uncertainty that comes with free agency.

At 30 years old, Sosa also enters the market with experience at several defensive positions and nearly a decade of professional baseball behind him. For the Phillies, retaining him could provide valuable depth and continuity as the club attempts to reshape a roster that once again fell short of its ultimate goal.

For Sosa, however, the immediate message was less about his next contract than the chapter he just completed. After five seasons in Philadelphia, his words made clear that whatever comes next, his time with the Phillies already holds a special place in his career.
