It is hard to recall many viral, out-of-nowhere sensations on the scale of Palworld , as when it launched in Early Access in January 2024, it exploded . Everyone was talking about “ Pokémon with guns,” the take on the monster-hunting genre that blended battling and capturing with survival base-building. And…guns.

Palworld hit a hard-to-believe 2.1 million concurrents on Steam, which remains the third-highest of all-time on the platform, behind only PUBG and Black Myth: Wukong, and ahead of Counter-Strike 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dota 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring, outright doubling some of those.

While you may think that Palworld had its moment in the sun back then and faded into obscurity, not so. Palworld has maintained a solid, consistent playerbase since that launch through a number of updates, and now, has launched in its full 1.0 version. It is putting up wild numbers.

2.5 years later, Palworld , here at 11 AM Eastern on launch day, is about to surpass 500,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. The fact that it’s putting up these figures now that it can no longer go “viral” the way it initially did is stunning. The 1.0 version of Palworld has made an enormous number of additions, including dozens of new pals, and the patch notes are the size of a short story.

Palworld has had some frustrating times after Nintendo has gone after it for various “patented” mechanics, from gliding with pals to summoning pals with balls, many of which the game has had to change to avoid protracted legal fights. This has done little but make fans angry at Nintendo, as Palworld also led many to accuse Nintendo of failing to evolve Pokémon over the years, which is why Palworld had the potential to eat its lunch.

Again, Palworld has been a healthy game since its release 2.5 years ago. It maintains a daily high of anywhere from 30-70,000 players, depending on updates, and for its biggest additions, has gone up as high as 200,000 again, to say nothing of console numbers.

Right before launch, developer Pocketpair said it had decided not to raise the price of Palworld , which is just $20 on a promotion until July 23 and $30 after that, despite adding far more content, likely doubling in scope since its initial launch.

With 1.0 here and clearly grabbing the attention of new and old players, Palworld is one to watch as a long-term hit in an industry where those are few and far between.
