Onimusha: Way Of The Sword - Release Date, Pre-Order Info And Editions
Capcom is reviving one of the most iconic action titles with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. There's plenty to explore here including the release date, pre-order options and the editions that carry their own bonuses. Let's talk video games.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Key Facts
When Does Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword releases Friday, September 4, 2026. Capcom officially moved the release forward from Sept. 25 to Sept. 4 after feedback from the playable demo.
Cached pages still carry the dead date.
What Do You Get for Pre-Ordering?
Pre-orders are live. The Standard Edition gets two bonus items: Charm: Lion Dog, an equipable charm that strengthens Musashi, and Sword Appearance: Sealed Curse, a cosmetic sword appearance. Deluxe and Premium Deluxe pre-orders get those two plus Charm: White Monkey and Sword Appearance: White Lion. The sword skins are cosmetic; the charms provide gameplay effects.
The date change is what created the wrinkle.
Capcom says the digital pre-order bonus became an Early Adopter Bonus, meaning buyers can still receive the content for a limited period after launch.

No paid early access has been announced. Standard, Deluxe and Premium Deluxe are all currently listed for the same September 4 launch. There is no three-day, five-day or seven-day early-access entitlement attached to the more expensive editions. Steam displaying Sept. 3 in some regions is an unlock and date-display issue, not an advertised edition benefit.
Readers keep assuming the pricier tiers buy days. They don't. Star Wars Zero Company had the same non-window.
Which Edition Should You Buy?
Standard runs $69.99 for the base game. Deluxe is $79.99 and adds the Deluxe Kit. Premium Deluxe is $89.99 and includes everything in Deluxe plus haori, outfits and an in-game mini digital soundtrack. The Premium tier is therefore predominantly cosmetics and soundtrack, rather than extra story content or early access.
So the $20 jump buys wardrobe, not story. Gothic 1 Remake split its tiers the same way.
The current platform list is PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. PC distribution includes Steam and other PC storefronts. Xbox lists Xbox Play Anywhere, while PS5 lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced. The Switch 2 version is also now officially dated for September 4 after the schedule change.
No platform was left behind by the move. Oblivion Remastered landed on Switch 2 the same way.
Should You Play the Demo First?
Capcom released a roughly 30-minute demo covering an early portion of the game, including Kiyomizu-dera Temple and a confrontation with Musashi’s rival Sasaki Ganryu. Demo progress does not transfer into the finished game. However, keeping demo save data earns the Charm: Kubi Akari in the full game. Play the demo before launch even if you don't finish it — keeping the save gets you a bonus charm.
The protagonist is legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, depicted as a young samurai who arrives in Kyoto determined to prove his superiority with the blade. Capcom licensed the likeness of legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune as Musashi's face model. Musashi becomes unwillingly bound to the mystical Oni Gauntlet. Initially he wants nothing to do with its supernatural power, but Capcom says his relationship with it changes as the story progresses. The central enemies are the supernatural Genma, while Sasaki Ganryu serves as one of Musashi's major martial rivals.
The gauntlet drives the story rather than powering him up.
How Does the Combat Actually Work?
This isn't simply a hack-and-slash game. Capcom is emphasizing deliberate blade-on-blade combat, with precise parries, directional deflects, Issen counterattacks, Reflex Combos, Oni Armaments, Oni Strength, Oni Agility, soul absorption, environmental attacks and dynamic dismemberment.
Oni Strength can break defenses and environmental obstacles, while Oni Agility provides high-speed movement and can even allow Musashi to run across certain walls. That gives the game a stronger mechanical identity than simply calling it "Samurai Devil May Cry."
Every system here is defensive first.
Capcom has pushed back against that framing. The game is not designed as an open world and isn't intended to be a punishing die-and-repeat Soulslike. Instead, Capcom is emphasizing satisfying swordplay and a more traditional action-adventure structure.
Capcom’s August preview says earlier, tighter missions eventually feed into larger explorable locations as Musashi earns additional Oni abilities. Inevitably, this game will be compared to Sekiro, but it seems they’re very different experiences.
Will the Full Game Be Harder Than the Demo?
This became an actual discussion after players complained that the public demo felt too easy. Capcom explained that the demo deliberately gives Musashi access to skills he wouldn't normally possess that early in the game, partly so players can experience more of the combat system in a short sample. The finished game includes Story Mode and Action Mode, along with additional assists that let players fine-tune the challenge. Capcom has also said regular Genma and bosses will provide a tougher fight in the final game.
The demo was a showcase, not a difficulty sample.
