‘Obsession’ Will Claim It’s A Comedy To Win Awards More Easily
There is something called “category fraud” across a number of awards shows, where submissions are accused of being placed in the wrong category to give those films or actors an easier path to a top prize. Now, the latest accusation has been leveled as Obsession , a disturbing horror film that is submitting itself in the Golden Globes’ Musical or Comedy category instead of Drama.
The report comes from The Hollywood Reporter that Focus Features will submit Obsession in the musical or comedy category. That’s not just for the Golden Globes’ split Best Picture across two categories, but that would mean everything else would be submitted on that side of things, including the actors it puts forward (which is likely to be all of them, with star Inde Navarrette as the favorite, of course).
It is extremely difficult to fathom how Obsession could be viewed as anything close to a comedy. The THR piece discusses how people laughed at “expressions” in the film, like Navarrette’s ultra-frown as Nikki, which has since become a meme.
THR goes on to say that insiders say that this has happened many times before, citing movies like Get Out, The Banshees of Inisherin, Triangle of Sadness, Poor Things, The Substance and Bugonia as films that submitted as comedies as well. If you have seen those films, you can clearly see the difference for nearly all of them. I’d say almost every single one (especially Banshees, Triangle and Poor Things , come on) has significant comedic elements, even a horror entry like Get Out (“I’d have voted for Obama a third time if I could"). The exception I could see here is The Substance , as I’m having a similarly difficult time finding much comedy in that film, but Obsession ? That would be the biggest offender of them all.
This year, Obsession may be up against films like Wild Horse Nine , an actual comedy, and Michael , an actual musical, and I have to imagine voters might take into consideration the idea that the movie being in this category is a bit ridiculous. Some have suggested that a “Best Horror Movie” category should be created, but I don’t think the answer is to split these genre categories even further. Not that the Golden Globes is exactly the most important awards show around.
That would of course be the Oscars, which does not have split categories. Obsession is also planning an awards push there, of course, though the main focus will be Inde Navarrette, who will go for Best Actress rather than attempting to explain why she is technically a supporting actress. Obviously, that’s not true. But neither is the comedy claim.
