Another Sunday and another tricky NYT Connections to solve. If you’re looking for help with today’s puzzling NYT Connections puzzle, this guide is here to help with some extra clues and every connection for the Yellow, Blue, Green and Purple groups.

We’re past halfway through October, and Halloween is just around the corner. I’m off to some warmer weather today, going to my first ever yoga festival which should be fun. Outdoor yoga is a very different experience than the hot yoga I’m accustomed to. Then it’s back to the old grindstone. In any case, we have some words to group in today’s rather challenging Connections puzzle. Let’s get to it!

As always, be sure to also check out my friendly neighborhood streaming guide for some really good TV show and movie recommendations. The days are getting chillier, so you might as well Netflix and chill.

Here’s the finished puzzle in the order I solved it:

Today’s NYT Connections is a 4/5 on the Connections Bot difficulty scale which is interesting because I thought the Purple words were quite obvious thanks to VAPORETTO being such a weird word that I immediately saw VAPOR and then honed in on MISTer, FOGerty and HAZEl. The Yellow words were also easy, though funny because WARDROBE made me instantly think about all the Narnia controversy I’ve been discussing on my YouTube channel lately .

The other color, alongside Yellow, Purple, Green and Blue, that we always have to consider with Connections is the color Red, as in “red herrings.”

  • Incense clouds the air with smoke, which makes it look like it belongs with purple. Opium smoke and dynamite blasts do the same, but purple only works through hidden starting words (FOG, HAZE, MIST, VAPOR), not the whole word.
  • Deodorant fits several groups. Spray deodorant puts a mist in the air, and it’s a scented product that sits close to perfume. It belongs with the sticks.
  • Mister suggests perfume because of the misting bottle, which pulls it toward blue. It’s purple through MIST.
  • Coco + Butter together make cocoa butter, another common scented product. That can pull butter away from the sticks. It’s also the most blatant red herring of the bunch. I’m always keenly aware of words that are placed next to each other that seem to go together.
  • Chest and Trunk are both body parts, and trunk also means an elephant’s nose or the back of a car. Those meanings can lead you away from the furniture group, though I admit this is a pretty flimsy red herring given how obvious the Yellow group is in general.
  • Bureau also means a government office or a desk, so it doesn’t read as clothing storage right away. It’s a bit of an antiquated word, in fact, so many people might not even know that it’s furniture.
  • Opium sounds like a drug before it sounds like a perfume. Paired with Angel (angel dust), that suggests narcotics, but thankfully today’s puzzle is drug-free.
  • Hazel looks like an eye color or a nut, so it doesn’t look like it belongs with purple. Of course, it doesn’t really go with anything else, either.

All told, a nice challenge today. Blue and Green were the tough groups for me, largely because while I know about Obsession (for men!) I am not big on perfume brands so that was a bit tricky. And while I think of sticks of dynamite, I don’t automatically think about sticks of deodorant or incense.
