The northern lights could be visible on Wednesday night from some northern states, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, after the Earth saw minor geomagnetic storms earlier this morning.

NOAA is predicting a Kp index of four out of nine on Wednesday night, meaning the aurora could be visible further from the magnetic north pole and appear brighter to some viewers in the right locations.

The agency previously issued an alert indicating the K-index reached five out of nine early on Wednesday morning, meaning the Earth saw minor levels of geomagnetic storms that can also cause the aurora to be visible further south.

Where Could the Northern Lights Be Visible?

States along the U.S.-Canadian border have a “low” likelihood of seeing the aurora on Wednesday, according to NOAA. These include northern Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Additionally, most of Alaska falls within range to see the lights. However, the sun sets very late in Alaska during the summer months, meaning the sky likely won’t get dark enough for the aurora to be visible.

What’s the Best Way to View the Northern Lights?

NOAA recommends viewers travel as far north as possible, towards Earth’s magnetic north pole located in northern Canada. They should position themselves on a vantage point with a clear view of the night sky, ideally one far away from cities or other sources of light. Viewers should try to time their trips to catch the lights when they are most active—typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

What’s the Best Way to Photograph the Northern Lights?

An expert who spoke to National Geographic said photographers can use smartphone cameras to take quality photos of the northern lights, provided they bring the right equipment and use the right settings. Experts generally recommend all photographers use a tripod and remote timer when trying to photograph the aurora to allow the camera to stand still long enough to let in enough light. Smartphone users should also use this equipment, and remember to use night mode with the flash off. Photographers should also aim to shoot in RAW image format.
