Agrivoltaic systems , which enable simultaneous crop production and solar electricity generation on the same land, can support climate mitigation, food security, and rural development. Surprisingly partially shading crops with solar panels generally makes more food in many cases . This is non-intuitive but farmers love it because they make more money in the same land. No surprise at all that agrivoltaics is booming. Agrivoltaics is more than a $14B industry already and is expected to balloon to $49B in the next five years . A lot of the crops like leafy greens, tomatoes , lettuce and other crops you would have in a salad have shown massive yield increases. Not all crops, however, increase their yield with partial shading. Other crops simply have not been tested. For instance, leguminous crops like beans are globally important, yet there is limited performance studies on how agrivoltaics would impact them. To overcome these limitations, a new study assessed organic green bush bean performance under thirteen different solar shading configurations with varying transparency and spectral properties.
Bean Solar Agrivoltaics - Yields Loss Small Revenue Gain Huge
The agrivoltaic study compared both agricultural outcomes against national yields and policy standards. Unlike many of the past studies on a similar set of experiments with lettuce and turnips , for example, more beans were not grown. The results in vegetative metrics indicated that blue-spectrum thin-film and intermediate-transparency conventional crystalline silicon solar modules supported growth near German productivity thresholds. Even without the increased yields there was money to be made. Although no agrivoltaic system matched national average yields, combining crop and energy revenues revealed substantial benefits: the 44%—transparent conventional cell panel configuration generated 340% more total revenue than traditional farming , and the blue 70%—transparent thin-film system achieved 94% of national yield but 164% of conventional farm revenue per acre.

In all the cases, the solar electricity generation gains outweighed modest bean crop reductions, highlighting still existing strong synergies between food and energy. The results of this study highlight the potential of agrivoltaic systems to enhance land-use efficiency, support renewable energy expansion, and improve rural economic resilience, while underscoring the need for multi-year trials and site-specific controls to validate long-term sustainability outcomes.
