Destiny fans continue to celebrate the news that, instead of leaving the series dead and buried forever, Destiny 2 will unvault its lost content , and Bungie has also started talking about potential future games.

While Bungie went over the basic of unvaulting — destinations, campaigns and raids would be unvaulted — there are additional questions, many of which have been directed my way. I know some of the answers, but there are plenty I don’t know. But I thought I would go through some of the most common questions I’m getting.

  • The Destiny 2 content unvaulting is free for everyone. Obviously, players who already bought the unvaulted content won’t be charged twice, but other players who hadn’t bought any of this previously are not going to be charged either. And you may recall that almost all of this unvaulted content was made free-to-play for a year or less before unvaulting cut it entirely. But yes, it’s all free.
  • No, unvaulting does not contain seasons. These were not “vaulted” in the traditional sense, but rotated in and out, as is pretty standard with any game like this. There are 25+ seasons, and the workload there would be pretty much impossible. Yes, this creates big gaps in the story, but there’s just no way this was feasible. As of now, there are no indications that individual activities from seasons will be brought back, though obviously that has already happened with Portal stuff in the past.
  • No, there are not going to be any more holiday events on rotation like The Dawning, Festival of the Lost, etc. Those weapons are already in the game 24/7 now, and it’s just not in the cards for now. Some are requesting at least the decorations returning. I dunno, maybe, no idea about that.
  • Back to more regular patches? At least until the unvaulting, this isn’t supposed to change past “gamebreaking” bugs being fixed, just like it is now. I think an important thing to realize with all of this is that Destiny 2 is not going back to live updates. Monument of Triumph really was end-of-service for the live part of Destiny 2 . As you may recall, almost everyone managing Destiny was laid off. Now, the priority will be unvaulting and whatever comes after that. No part of this is continually updating D2 now, even in minor ways. It’s going to stay how it is at least until the unvaulting, which, best guess, is sometime next year. After that, I don’t know if more minor updates could return.
  • No, Shattered Cycle isn’t going to be finished and released. See the above. A ton of updates were moved from that expansion to MoT. Lore got pretty screwed up given that they had to dump out a bunch of plotlines and change the entire direction of the game (welp, the Nine have chilled out). So there is not “one last expansion” coming, Renegades is it.
  • I do not know if every single strike and crucible map and that one gambit map are being unvaulted. It stands to reason that if a strike is part of a story campaign, it would have to be. I can’t remember if Escalation Protocol was a part of the Warmind campaign, but I would at least guess it will be there. Many crucible maps have already been unvaulted from the old list, and those that remain aren’t exactly many people’s favorites. Not sure resources would be used on those. Not banking on Kell’s Grave showing up for Gambit either.
  • I don’t know if Forsaken weapons will be free after being oddly separated out like they were. I’m not sure Bungie knows yet either, and this may be the kind of detail that will be worked out later. My guess is yes, as it would be odd to leave that paid with all this and Forsaken back.
  • Almost everyone is assuming that all returning content, especially the raids, will drop tiered gear and include things like new origin traits and set bonuses. I don’t know if that’s true. Keep in mind that resources remain really limited right now for all of this. I’m sure Bungie will address this at some point, but don’t take anything as a given right now.
  • Wrath of the Machine. I get it, it’s the white whale, but there are no indications this is coming. Never say never but it’s not magically going to show up at the unvaulting. I can’t like, 100% confirm this, but I’m almost sure it’s not happening, at least not in this initial content stretch here. Would be a fun surprise but don’t bank on it at all.

That’s all I’ve got for now. Hopefully at least some of this was clarifying, and I’m sorry if some seems like bad news, but I mean, come on, overall this is awesome. Again, Bungie says more than just unvaulting is coming, and it’s just the start of the series being reborn. There’s plenty more to get excited about from here.
