Video games are undergoing a monstrous transformation—using AI tools, amateur coders are “remixing” two or more games together, creating Frankenstein-like titles with clashing features.

The entire digital landscape has been impacted by the speed and ease of creating media with generative AI, an explosion of content that critics have dubbed the “sloppification” of the web.

The gaming industry has been hit hard, as AI coding tools have unleashed a flood of indie titles of dubious quality, many of them rushed or even cloned from original games.

Now, AI coding has advanced enough to enable amateurs to merge existing games together, sparking a new trend.

Vibe Coders Are Remixing Video Games

Gamers are using AI tools to decompile and rebuild classic games, altering them by introducing characters and gameplay elements from other titles— Minecraft , in particular, has proved a popular title to merge.

So far, Minecraft has been merged with Elden Ring , and skateboarding has been introduced to Call of Duty .

Merging two contrasting concepts has always been a common use of AI—early experiments with image and video generators resulted in clashing viral creations, such as “ Harry Potter Balenciaga ,” “swagged out Pope” and images of Mickey Mouse committing terrorist attacks on 9/11.

Eventually, the novelty wears thin, even if the remixing doesn’t stop—“AI slop” still blends pop culture iconography together into digestible slurry, but the results don’t attract as much attention.

The gaming merging might lose momentum after gamers begin to play-test AI-coded hybrids, and see the limitations of the concept in action. Some of the viral clips might be entirely AI-generated, although many appear to be playable.

Not to mention, the entire trend is a copyright minefield that will surely attract the ire of game developers.

AI-generated code is notoriously buggy and difficult to decipher, and it’s unclear if any of these remixed titles can handle extended gameplay, beyond the viral snippets that have been posted online.

However, many gamers have taken delight in the trend, witnessing absurd mash-ups that their childhood selves would have loved to see.

One user even suggested that the future of cheap, malleable software could lead to applications that combine gaming with regular tasks, such as doing taxes in Silent Hill .

Other commentators weren’t so excited. Many were unhappy to see another form of “AI slop” flow through social media without resistance, dubbing the compiled games “ slopcomp .”

Experienced game modders lamented the sudden rush of content, some pointing out that the careful craftsmanship of modding is a delicate art—not something to be automated away.

Hobbyists who had taken the time to painstakingly create their own gaming remixes without using AI found themselves swept up in the trend, as commentators assumed that their projects were built with the help of AI coding tools.

Fears of an impending slop tsunami, along with a devaluation of programming skills, echoed through the timeline, alongside bizarre clips of Super Mario firing bullets into Master Chief and Minecraft’s Steve gliding through the snowy peaks of Skyrim .

Modern pop culture is already self-referential, packed with reboots, spin-offs and crossovers, and AI appears to be greatly accelerating that process.
