October 27 is a big day for Nintendo Switch 2 owners — especially the ones who are also Minecraft fans. That’s the day when one of the greatest games of all time lands on the console with the community it was seemingly built for. If you already owned it on the original Switch, you probably have one simple question: can I upgrade for free? Here’s the answers to that question and a few more. Let’s talk Minecraft.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 Key Facts

Yes, if you own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch. Digital owners can claim the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free on the Nintendo eShop through Jan. 31, 2027 , in most territories, with Japan and Taiwan charging a small fee. The offer doesn’t cover physical cartridge owners.

Digital owners can also move up to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at a discount. Nintendo Everything reported seeing 75% off Deluxe and 60% off Ultimate, but Nintendo hasn’t published fixed upgrade prices.

Another question fans might have is whether it’s worth it to splurge for the Ultimate edition. The answer depends on your current plans. It’s hard to justify the Standard. What Minecraft fan doesn’t want the exclusive character creator items or Minecoins?

Because the Standard edition doesn’t offer those two items, the real decision is between the Deluxe and Ultimate. Because Minecraft is already not a full-price title, I can’t imagine not going for the Ultimate. I’d drop the additional $10 and enjoy my Decocraft, weapons and tools and 1,000 Minecoins.
