I love and hate this. On Tuesday, Sony announced a new Midnight Black PS5 set to release on November 19, the same day as Grand Theft Auto 6 . Sounds great, right? Yeah, and it looks just as cool as it sounds. However, it’s a Japan exclusive. That went from 60 to 0 pretty quickly for PlayStation customers outside of Japan. Want another kick in the gut? It’s going for 55,000 yen, which is about $350. Let’s talk video games.

Midnight Black PS5 Key Facts

The console is the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, and it is a Japanese-language-only model . A matching Midnight Black disc drive launches alongside it.

Sony has done a Japan-only console before. In November 2025, it launched a Japanese-language-only PS5 Digital Edition exclusively for that market.

My hope is that this winds up being the first phase of release for the Midnight Black PS5s. While it is just a cosmetic switch, it’s a great get for users who may want a second PS5 or who have been wanting to make the plunge, but haven’t been able to swing it for the $599.

The number of products being loosely and tightly tied to the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is astounding. It seems like every company that produces hardware, entertainment products or anything that can be connected to the GTA 6 release is getting a tie-in.

If there’s any question as to how big of a deal this game is and will be upon release, just take a look at how companies are falling over themselves to be involved. The video game industry has been huge for decades, but we’ve never seen anything quite like the GTA 6 effect.
